Re: 1798/9 Dutch uniforms?

The book on the Anglo-Russian campaign is "Voorwaarts Bataven" by Geert van Uythoven. (ISBN 9789028814271)

There's a new edition coming out in English. It includes a campaign and a uniform guide.

Re: Dutch Flags

Standardisation of Dutch Flags came with the Batavian Republic in 1795 and even in that time period probably "older colours" were used. Remember, a lot of flags captured by the French were destroyed when the Allies neared Paris in 1815, some of the historical collection of the Dutch Department of De...

Re: The Great Captain-Generals of our Period

I know he is not popular, but when using Barry's criteria above, I would rank William III rather high, especially given his remarkable skill on both a tactical and strategic level in 1672 and 1673, his diplomatic skills of making sure that in the end of the 1679 war France basically stood alone and ...

Re: Swiss infantry in Spanish or Foreign service

In 1988 in the dutch history and genealogy magazine "Gens Nostra" a very detailed article was published called "Swiss Regiments in Dutch service", by Rob Murray, listing all Swiss regiments and troops up to the French period. The illustrations look like they have come from the dutch army museum, unf...

Re: Dutch Cavalry (1672–78)

Yes, but the question is, were these the same uniforms as in 1672-1678, given the fact that every four years new uniforms were issued?

Check out the http://www.rijksmuseum.nl site, use the search function, and enter the word "seneffe" or "st denis". https://lh5.ggpht.com/BDrnFpJjO0RDcCa6Wp570XixAtSKX75Qr-9clVNc6736jiuZUfsaW_7hKcXj5eg8-ejMMJlZ1F_-B0mS6n4mbkRXjEg=s0 And what can we conclude or deduce from this pic then? Re: Sources on terrain in Spanish Netherlands?

In my humble view, one of the best works is the so-called Atlas Schoenmaker, made by two travellers in the Low Countries. http://rampjaar.blogspot.nl/search/label/Atlas%20Schoemaker Another great source is the picture archive of the dutch national museum in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum.. https://www.r...

Re: Dutchman 50th Woss

Edwin, I do not see why you think the association with Prins Willem Maurits van Nassau-Siegen is "a bit far-fetched". Willem Maurits was Colonel of the regiment from 1673 through 1684 when Haersolte took over. In addition, one of the companies in the regiment was provided by Nassau-Siegen. The flag...

Re: Dutchman 50th Woss

We are discussing some themes as well on our facebook page "The year 1672". One of my problems with the "Haersholte Flag" is the link with William Maurice, which in my view is a bit far fetched.

In the Robert Hall CD on the Dutch Army in the NYW and beyond a flag is attributed to this regiment, but I have my doubts about it.

Re: Dutchman 50th Woss

Good one, as Barry states, the Beaumont regiment could be a likely candidate, but Hall mentions rightly the fact that that regiment wasn't at Tilroy at all. (the colour id comes from the moch quoted "Tilroy Camp list". Another candidate would be Rutger van Haersholte, later Reg. Rijn- en Wildgraaf v...

Re: Marlborough: soldier and diplomat

At the Crisis convention in Antwerp, I had the pleasure to meet the editors of Karwansaray, who are also avid wargamers. (They have three wargaming magazines in stock).

They just released a book on the Duke of Alva, another controversial military man, which is a rather tempting buy as well.
