Re: Did generals have uniforms?

To answer part of your question, senior officers as a rule would have portraits painted wearing 3/4 armour or partial armour, this was the martial tradition at the time and symbolises masculinity and military prowess and has nothing to do with what they actually wore on a day to day. as a side note,...

Re: Osprey Armies of GNW MAA 529

I was looking forward to receiving it but I found it really disappointing. unlike you, the selective bibliography takes almost half of the articles from the Great Northern War compendium which seems lazy at best. Although the original artwork is very nice, to cover all the armies of the GNW (with th...

Re: GNW Livonian Adelsfana Warfare figures

Roger,

another great looking unit, having the grey uniforms makes a good contrast to the Swedish blue, If I could ask, where did you get the standard from?

Re: German states: Dates of flintlock adoption?

Unfortunately, there is not a simple answer to this question, although I cannot give firm information regarding the German states, I can for the English army. As late at 1690, the Board of Ordnance was still placing large orders (10,000) for matchlocks as well as for flintlock (snaphance) Muskets, f...

Re: Prussian Grenadiers in GNW: Flags?

in the article on the Prussian army during the GNW in volume 2 of the GNW compendium written by Stephen Summerfield, he states that the Grenadier companies were not issued with standards.

I would also go with Red with black metal fittings, all the research including the new book on the Russian Army by Boris Megorsky comes to this conclusion.

Re: When did Spain adopt the flintlock?

I don't have any concrete evidence, but I would suggest the majority of units would still be equipped with Matchlocks, or a mix of matchlock and flintlock. I have been involved in research at the National Army Museum and British Library over the last couple of months and the English army during this...
