Re: WSS French Dragoons

All French dragoon regiments had a consistent field strength of three squadrons during the WSS. The older ones had had as many as four during the Dutch war in the 1670's, but that number was reduced to three after 1680. Most French line cavalry regiments had two squadrons but some - usually the olde...

Re: VAE VICTUS REVIEW

The review is a positive one. It's a long piece, so a full translation would take way too long to do and much of the text describes how the rules system works anyway, but the gist of it is that the reviewer enjoyed Donnybrook, as the parting lines show - my translation : 'All in all, Donnybrook is a...

Re: Source for WSS French Uniforms

WSS French gunners - a.k.a the Régiment Royal de l'Artillerie -wore grey coats lined blue with red waistcoats, breeches and stockings. The blue coat with red facings only replaced that uniform in 1720, five years after Louis XIV's death, and blue remained the colour of French artillery uniforms for ...

Re: DE Lenk flag

Which of the 24 flags have you shown :) The correct one for the period. As the French text above makes it clear, the one you provide a description for is the post-1760 drapeau d'ordonnance . As far as the regiment's structure is concerned, Susane is pretty clear on the matter : Sparre had two batta...

Re: DE Lenk flag

The infantry regiment you have in mind was raised in 1690 as Leisler from Swedish soldiers in Dutch service captured at the battle of Fleurus. The unit became Sparre in 1694 and Lenck in 1714. Though originally formed from Swedish captives and later becoming Royal-Suédois, it was considered a German...

Re: Grand Alliance converged grenadiers

Not to sound like a button counter or a history nazi, but I don't think you can blame Ray for providing Chema with the historical answer he asked for in his original post. Ray's just telling it like it is : grenadiers could indeed be used as shock troops and organised into ad hoc assault parties dur...

Re: Source for WSS French Uniforms

Hi Doug

Yes, your rendition of feuille morte - i.e dead leaf - is as good as any. And though they may seem like a detail at first sight, the red waistcoats really add a welcome dash of colour amidst all that grey.

Re: Crisis 2013 figure

Bit of threadomancy here, but I'm reviving this to find out if I could possibly get the officer figure in its unpainted form. I've had a look at Ebay but can't seem to come up with results.

Anyone here has a spare figure for sale or knows where I can get one ?

Re: North Star 1672 & Phoenix Miniatures

Hi guys , any ideas of when any of those NS 1672 beauties will come out ?? cheers. No time scale yet as Steve Saleh is working on several other things but a very reliable source tells me Nick Eyre is keen to develop the range further, so more figures will definitely be added in an as yet undisclose...

Re: Source for WSS French Uniforms

I very much doubt your unit would have been laughed off the table, Doug. Feuille morte is one of those interesting colours everyone seems to interpret his or her own way : some illustrators render it as a medium brown, others as a slightly orangey shade of tan. For what it's worth, I'd suggest using...

Re: Source for WSS French Uniforms

Just finished the Regiment of Navarre... To be pedantic about it, Navarre's drapeaux d'ordonnance had feuille morte - i.e orange brown - cantons, not green ones. Your coloured flag appears to combine the golden lillies and crowned arms of Navarre devices featured on the white cross of the Navarre c...

Re: English regiments in Spain, 1703-1711

Do either Tincey or Sapherson give their source, Arthur? Tincey uses a primary source dated June 30th 1686 - A list of King James' Army on Hounslow Heath as they lay encamped . Sapherson doesn't provide footnotes outside of the bibliography featured at the end of his booklet, but I suspect he was m...

Re: English regiments in Spain, 1703-1711

When formed by Lord Dartmouth in 1685, the Royal Fusiliers had red coats lined yellow and fusilier caps with yellow front plates. John Tincey and Alan Sapherson concur on yellow facings for the 1690's and the Nine Years War. The blue facings seem to have been adopted during the early years of the WS...

Re: English regiments in Spain, 1703-1711

I, too, would like to know your opinion, as people really interested in this period of History and not as secessionists that are looking for an History. Can we keep the pro-unionist politics separate from a mutual love for toy soldiers? ;) Well, Xavier Rubio's take on the subject is obviously very ...
