Re: Russell's Horse

Ormonde was of course a person of note, and had been a supporter of the Stuarts ever since Charles and James were toddlers. I don't know his full bio, but understand that he was respected by James, and I don't believe Ormonde was much of a rebel -- he was also quite old when James attempted to pursu...

Re: Russell's Horse

What could also be of interest is that Theodore Russell (the colonel), commanded a regiment of foot under James II in Ireland before getting the regiment of horse. This colonelcy of the foot regiment lasted until January 1687, when Russell became lieutenant-colonel of the horse regiment under Ormond...

Re: Russell's Horse

Theodore Russell succeeded the Duke of Ormonde as colonel in September 1688. I am not sure if he was removed, or whether he decided to cast his fate with William III. In any case, his regiment was taken over by Patrick Sarsfield with the regiment becoming part of the Irish Jacobite Army. The regimen...

Re: ‘History of the British Standing Army AD 1660 - 1700’

It is a nice book which catalogues a tremendous amount of (little) details. Unfortunately there seems to be only one digitized copy around, which is also used by some profiteers who sell it in paper, which misses pages 156-169 (covering the battle of Aughrim). Guess the person scanner the pages fell...

Re: Huguenot Red & Blue Dragoons

hi Phil, You are welcome. If there is mis-identification, then that is mostly due to our moderners misunderstanding of that period. From the Dutch perspective, these Huguenot officers were probably just incorporated (attached to) in established regiments (the Garde Dragonders and Marwitz' Regiment)....

French mercenaries in the Royalist army

dear all, Not an expert on military matters of the English Civil Wars, I was triggered by a reference to the employment of French mercenaries in the Royalist army between 1643 and 1645. This is stated in 'The Civil Wars. A Military History of England, Scotland and Ireland 1638--1660', edited by John...

Re: Huguenot Red & Blue Dragoons

hi Phil, These are indeed two mystery regiments. As many will know, many Huguenots had fled to the Dutch Republic after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. What could happen with the refugees with military ambitions, is that they were attached (incorporated) in Dutch regiments. In principle that ...

forces of the Covenanter Rebellions in 1666 and 1679

dear all, Just an odd question that popped to my mind lately. The Covenanter army of the 1679 rebellion was not really small, several thousand of men. What I wondered, is there any information on their composition, if any, and possible sub-structuring in battalion or regiments? kind regards, Wienand

Hanoverian Regiment (later 9B) Lewenhaupt 1693

dear all, Yet another question on the identification of a Hanoverian colonel in the early 1690s. It is related to the Hanoverian Regiment (or the Calenberg partition of Brunswick-Luneburg) that was later denoted as 9B (as it formed the root of the 9. Infanterie Regiment that was formed in 1773). Thi...

Re: Mecklenburger regiment 'Krassow' 1708

hi all, Thanks for the replies. Still not convinced :-) It simply doesn't make sense for Ernst Detlof to be busy in Mecklenburg, whilst pursuing other things in Sweden and who was busy in Poland around 1708 and 1709. Also, the wiki on Adam Philipp states he commanded a regiment of dragoons, was prom...

Mecklenburger regiment 'Krassow' 1708

all, Having some time for research with the force isolation &c, I wanted to ask about the Krassow brother during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, We have Ernst Detlof von Krassow (1660-23 Jan 1714). An officer in Swedish service, ultimately reaching the rank of lieutenant-general. The German ...

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

[ I have a book on this but at the moment I have lost it. King William abolished James II's regiment the "Lord Admiral's Maritime Regiment" because of its historical ties to James II. Some uniforms from James II's reign: Do you have a source for the statement is was disbanded because of particular ...
