Re: The feel of the thing

Question for all the GNW players out there. The Swedes in the GNW retained the pike and used shock/Ga Pa tactics for their infantry. How does a game feel; Is it as per its counterpart the WSS or more like LoA/9YW/GA period because of the pike? Does the cavalry more or less operate the same way, etc...

Re: Looking for a Watermill

Another option is to use TSS 'flat pack buildings'. They do lots of resin building bits (walls & roofs and such), including a (smallish) water wheel: http://totalsystemscenic.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1048_1178_1179_1182&products_id=4283 I use their buildings for most of my 'non sho...

Re: Great Northern War Range

While I appreciate the fact that figures of attacking pikemen do make things a tad complicated on the tabletop and in the storage boxes, I agree with EvilG that the Swedes just need attacking poses, including the pikemen. Perhaps looking over the hedge to the other side of the hill might help there ...

Re: Barry, translate this with the Google translater LOL

so what does IT REALLY MEAN? The translation is not that far off, actually. The only thing is that it seems to use the most, shall we say, suggestive words possible. The only thing it actually gets wrong is that it translates auf as in instead of on. Otherwise it's all good: Kohlmeisen = great -, t...

Re: Front rank and elite or foundry?

Just to give you an idea as to the difference in size between Front Rank & Foundry:

Left is Front Rank, right is Foundry. I probably need to do something about it, but we're used to the Bavarian giant and his pygmy escort by now :)

Re: Start of GNW project

Having built a GNW army out of Musketeer Swedes myself, I'm very interested to see how this will develop! Great work so far.

17th-18th(ish) Cossacks

In my gaming group we've recently embarked on one of the CS Grant / Phil Olley mini campaigns (the Raid on St Michel one). I've set the 'campaign' in Ingria in the early 1700s, so it features Swedes and Russians as the opposing forces. As the Grant style of 'tabletop teaser' often makes use of light...

Re: Town Called Hell

From the looks of it, the Indians are definitely Foundry (the packs were called Plains Indians - they probably don't exist anymore). The Mexicans don't look like Foundry to me, but I might be wrong :)

Re: What's your technique...

The technique I was using was painting the top of the hat and let a bit of the paint go on the side. So do you guys hit the top and sides of the hat? Thanks. I do just the top, using the technique Clarence (Quindia) mentioned - use the side of the brush. I load the brush fairly heavily so I get a t...

Re: GNW Russian Guard Grenadiers

While for the 'highlight' of the Great Northern War their hats are totally ahistorical, I am of the opinion that any horse and musket Russian wargames army needs to include the Preobrazhenski guard, with the funny hats. It's just one of those wargame things, like red tunics on Roman legionaries and ...

Re: Some GNW Swedes

Just one thing which would worry me is the position of the trumpeter, who needs to tighten his girth before he ends up falling off & playing swallow the trumpet. All because his saddle slipped. Ginger Yes - I noticed that as well. To me, he looks like he's trying to blow the dust out of the ...

Some GNW Swedes

By way of introducing myself on this forum, I thought I'd post some of my recently (very recently - the matt varnish is not even on yet :) ) painted Swedish GNW stuff (that's a scientific term). I have a fairly large 1709 GNW collection (the 'high tide' of the Swedish army) but I like to paint up a ...
