Re: The cost of wargames figures

I would say that price is important to me but less so than quality. I will pay more for better figures but prices have encouraged me to change my buying tactics. I do not buy a whole army at a time now; simply unit by unit. This way my mountain is less and so is the outlay. There is a better reason ...

Re: Found it!

I still like hard copy - though you can even get magazines on Kindle and Ipads, ok for the train but the perhaps not the loo. The best bid about magazines is serendipity - you dont know what is about to come up and there is often something new you hadn't seen before or thought about. Plus there are ...

Re: Found it!

Thanks for the tip Gunter, technology not my strong point - clearly remebering useless information is! It was interesting to see what was actually inside the magazine though. A real trip down memory lane. Companies such as Table Top games, Mike's Models have gone down the pan (I wonder if anyone sti...

Found it!

It seems my memory is not as bad as my wife seems to think. Remember the conversation at Derby about Barry's article on famous wargames figures. I knew I had seen Peter Guilder's young gaurd on a front cover of an old Military Modelling - I thought it was late 70's. Yesterday, at Targe,I was rummagi...

Removal of 'spent' battalions

Something that has occurred to me is the resiliance of our model battalions beyond their historical counterparts. I had a number of units still functioning with 2-4 figures left. This represents 80% losses; a huge amount. Historically a unit would be broken much sooner than this. I think it would ma...

Re: Commanded Shot...

I completely agree with Andy. In the first game I had two squadrons decimated by a single unit of forelorn Hope. I know they were crossing a river at the time (slowly) but it still seems far too effective. I'd suggest that they dont get the bonuses for all musket, Defend orders or first fire. In my ...

Re: Derby October Grand Alliance/WSS

Got back at last, work today seemed slightly unreal - I kept wanting to play an event card and roll a dice to resolve things. Now that would be a way to determin a planning application! Many thanks to Barry,Adrian and Bob for the hard work setting it up. Not an easy task but superbly well done and y...

Excellent, thanks for the tip. I know the brand so I'll look out for some. All I need now is some warm sunny weather in the north of Scotland - sigh......

Re: 5te Schlesische Landwehr Kavallerie (Calpe | 28mm)

These look really nice, I like the dynamism in the poses. I am curious about the varnish you are using, what type is it? I am getting a bit frustrated with finding a good matt varnish. I prefer to brush on but the model colour one I use isnt quite matt enough. I have also tried Testors, which is a s...

Re: Ironic use of Tufts

I have always favoured a natural look for my garden - and all the time I save I can spend on my figures. Better for your wargaming, better for your back (less bending) and better for the biodiversity. Thats what I call a win, win, win outcome

Re: Comparison photos of warfare and North Star cavalry

Hi Barry, I have absolutely no complaints about the mould lines - they were virtually non existant and as I said the figure casting is a real improvement. I did like the slighlty OTT feathers on the NS figures as well as the shoulder braiding and large moustaches - very characterful and easy to pain...

Re: Comparison photos of warfare and North Star cavalry

I don't have any Front Rank Cavalry but their infantry is significantly larger than Warfare and noticably larger than the 1672. The North Star figures are bigger than Warfare but once based the difference doesn't seem particulalrly noticable. I enjoyed painting both but they are quite different in s...

Comparison photos of warfare and North Star cavalry

I have just posted a few photos of my two new French squadrons into photobucket. One uses North star's 1672 range (Dauphin Etranger in blue) the other is from Barry's own Warfare range (Conti regiment). They are side by side so comparisons can be made. You can find them here if you are interested: h...
