Dutch Infantry Companies in firing Line

When a Dutch infantry company was in firing line where were the grenadiers? Hall CD has 10 grenadiers per company, post 1701, and 45 soldiers. If the 12 companies were divided into 18 platoons that would mean 30 soldiers per platoon. The 10 grenadiers would equal 120 bodies or four platoons. Would t...

Re: Dutch Flags

Yes you are quite correct, much more than the 12 I stated. I am interested in those flags from the LOA/WSS time period. Some of the flags shown were taken were from the battle of Seneffe, 1674, while other came from the 1740s. Interestingly the foreign regiments, Scots and Swiss are better documente...

Re: Dutch Flags

Thank you all appreciate the responses. Looks like the Belaubre books may be the single best source. The few makers of 28mm LOA/WSS flags do the same 12 regiments (infantry) so I'm curious to see if there's more out there. Seems four different volumes just on the Dutch would produce more than the sa...

Dutch Flags

Anyone know any sources beyond the Hall CD for Dutch LOA/WSS flags? I've thought about looking for a copy of Trophees De La Guerre De Succession D'Espagne, 1700-1713 , but don't want to spend the money if it's already covered by Hall. Hard to believe that such a major participant is so poorly docume...

Re: TROPHEES DE LA GUERRE DE SUCCESSION D'ESPAGN

Many thanks for the replies. I read Spanish well enough and can usually get the gist of what's being said in French. Sounds like I probably have most of this info with other sources though so I'll save the $35 for something else.

TROPHEES DE LA GUERRE DE SUCCESSION D'ESPAGN

Just trying to get an idea on how this stacks up as a reference book for flags. Worth $35?

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

Sounds like the ritterpferde were used to charge after the intended victim had been "softened up". Can't see them with a lance and pistols. Based off of your OOB it looks like companies were somewhere between 100-200 troopers. Did the Saxons use two companies to form a squadron? Don't feel alone in ...

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

Thanks Gunter. Admittedly my sources aren’t the best, a combination of Osprey’s and the internet. I don’t have access to many of the primary sources, not to mention that I read German very slowly. I can handle Spanish pretty well, but any other language and I’m out of luck. It also seems that this w...

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

I'm also curious about the Ritterpferde. I don’t see them listed on the OOBs I have for Breitenfeld or Lutzen. Would they have been called cuirassiers too, only armed differently? The OOB I have for Lutzen lists the following Saxon cavalry present: Prinz Ernst von Anhalt (Saxon) Cuirassier Regiment ...

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

Gunter, were the Saxons still using the traditional caracole as late as the 1630s? My understanding was that this type of tactic was superseeded by an "updated" caracole where the first two ranks fired their pistols and than a general charge ensued or even a charge sans pistols.

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

How would the cavalry be formed during this same period? Were the squadrons smaller, as per the Dutch (3-5 rank 40-50 man squadrons/companies)? Would there be a mix of cuirassiers and arquebusiers in the same squadron or regiment? My thought would be separate regiments, as this is an administrative ...

Re: Saxon tactical formations during TYW

Gunther, Many thanks, very helpful. Would it be correct to assume Saxons were in ~500 man battalions? A post on another form said they were formed up at Breitenfeld in 1000 man units. What sources do you use for the Saxons during this time period (and the Northern Wars) if you don't mind me asking? ...

Saxon tactical formations during TYW

How did the Saxon infantry form up during the "Swedish Phase" of the TYW? I've read that they used a modified form of the Dutch system. I interpret this to mean ~500 man battalions with pike in the middle and two sleeves of musketeers on either flank. Pike to shotte ratio being roughly 40%-60%. Two ...
