Re: Anyone help with some basic uniform details?

For uniform detail on the forces of Cologne and the Archbishopric of Liege, the Pike and Shot society publication on the flags and uniforms of the Dutch army have details in the back of them. For the cavalry, all with black neck cloth, black hats with white lace. C.R.Castro Regiment; white uniform,...

Did the Spanish use lancers in NYW?

I have an ebook called "The Spanish Armies in the War of the League of Augsburg 1688-97" by Boeri and others. It mentions that the cavalry of Catalonia had 7 companies of cuirassiers "that could be named either Cuirassiers or Arquebusiers or even Lances". I had thought that the Spanish had stopped u...

Killiecrankie/Dunkeld 1689 uniforms?

I'm looking for information on Jacobite uniforms - if any - in this battle and the wider Jacobite rising of 1689 in Scotland.

Did Alexander Cannon's Irish regiment have a uniform? Were there French soldiers present?

I largely have the Williamite uniforms.

Re: Imperial Austrian drummers in 1680s

The Coburg regiment's drummer wore a black coat with yellow or gold decorations on the coat. In this case, black was the regiments facing colour, and the regimental uniform was grey with black cuffs.

Austrian guard units

I am seeking information on whether Habsburg Austria had "guard" units in the late 17th century, and if so what uniforms they had. I have looked at the Xenophon website which has many Austrian uniforms. But I have not encountered any designated "guard units". Were there any? There obviously were in ...

Decline of the apostle belt bandolier

When did Austria and the German states stop using the bandolier of charges known as the "12 apostles" worn by musketeers? I was reading Osprey's "Louis XIV's Army" and it mentioned that in 1683, the bandolier of charges (known as the 12 apostles) was abandoned by French matchlock musketeers and repl...

This comes from an article in Wargames illustrated, and should help, sorry i can't remember which issue  Regarding Portland's Horse, as far as I've read they are indeed the Gardes te Paard. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-oRsfxwslui8/UODDuYxHTPI/AAAAAAAAKuA/paAtFoHr4Is/s640/DSCF1487.JPG Th...

Re: Hanoverian Regiment (later 9B) Lewenhaupt 1693

I don't have any information on their uniform at this time. But by the time of the Seven Years War, Regiment 9B wore a red coat with green cuffs. Granted this was 70 years later and it may well have changed by then. https://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Jung_Zastrow_Infantry If the regiment ...

Expect that this dignitary is supposed to be King Christian V of Denmark.

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

Would paintings of the generals in actual battles be a better guide?

I found this painting of the Siege of Wismar 1674, and it shows what seems to be a general wearing a breastplate over a buff coat with a red sash. The flag seems to indicate this is the Danish army.

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

Perhaps but I would point out that in Sapherson's "Dutch Army of William III", it says that in the Dutch army, many officers wore blue coats especially in the high command, and even in greycoated regiments. http://reenactor.ru/ARH/PDF/Sapherson_00.pdf On the other hand a painting of the Battle of th...

Re: Wss Danish Grenadier uniforms

An original grenadier cap was actually found in excavations at an old palace. It is the cap shown at 0.07 seconds into this video is mentioned in an ebook I have (the aforemention one on the Danish uniforms from 1699 onwards). Its a cap of the Jyske Regiment I think, and is from around 1700. It has ...

Re: Portuguese uniforms in WSS

I used to have Pat Condray's book on this, which was black and white paperback. Regarding references to the "livery" colours, the book does list those but we don't know for certain whether those liveries were the same colours as the uniforms. In some cases it was those. Nearly all the infantry seems...

Re: 1690 Lord Grand Prior's Regiment

Nice work. As a matter of interest, I recently found online a document file of a diary by a Jacobite soldier called John Stevens. He says this regiment had a red coat with "fillamot" lining. Fillamot refers to the French "feuille-mort", meaning "dead leaf" colour. You can read it here . It has some ...
