Re: BLB "War of the 3 KIngs"; Newbie Questions

Thanks for the comments on the painting. I use cm instead of inches; so, essentially, units are moving about half distances. This allows me to use a smaller playing surface. The second edition of BLB includes a scenario entitled Steinbeke . Barry used a table 6ft x 8ft for his 'play-through' but I w...

Re: BLB "War of the 3 KIngs"; Newbie Questions

I have done armies for BLB using Pendraken's 10mm League of Augsburg range and basically substituted centimetres for inches. The bases are 25mm square for foot and 30mm square for horse, giving 18 figures for foot (plus another 6 on the pike bases) and 12 figures for horse. You can see how they look...

Great painting and beautiful castings - a very nice little group.

Re: Wheeling as part of a Charge

Many thanks Barry, particularly the point that the wheeling template is needed only for normal movement and not charging.

Re: Wheeling as part of a Charge

@ Schomberg That is how I would read it too. The end of the move is effectively "freezing time" and, assuming that the unit passes its checks to charge next move, the move into contact is actually the conclusion of the charge initiated in the previous move. In essence the charge has taken longer to ...

Re: Wheeling as part of a Charge

I’m glad that Schomberg raised this, as there are a few points I wasn’t clear about either. 1. If I have understood Barry correctly, then the Charge distance = (10inches + D6) – D6. Using this as a cavalry example: 10 + D6 score of 3 = 13, less D6 score of 5 gives a total charge move of 8 inches. Th...

Re: Standards for Regt de Dillon

Old John and Lee Thanks for your comments. The images were very good but still inconclusive, as much in this period seems to be. I'm edging towards an all white standard with the crown and motto, rather than one with a red cross, if only because it looks a bit odd to see a St George's cross in among...

Standards for Regt de Dillon

I have a question regarding the Colonel's colour carried by the Regiment de Dillon in the NYW and WSS that I hope someone can throw some light on. There seems to be agreement that the Irish regiments in French service carried Ordonnance flags with a red cross bordered white, with canton 1 and 4 colo...

Re: LOA Armies

As Glorfindel says some wargamers do tend to mentally separate the 'Williamite Wars' and WSS, I think this arises partly due to William's death during what Glorfindel describes as the "half time break". William himself was very aware of what Carlos's death would bring for Europe.

Re: Garde te Paard Question

Sorry for not responding sooner, I forgot my password and, as I was on leave yesterday, didn't have access to it in my Outlook Contacts folder. Clib - your engraving is the same image as the colour image that Gorfindel and I found at History Ireland, with the added bonus of a key describing who and ...

Re: Garde te Paard Question

Hi Phil Many thanks for that, I hoped that someone would check the Hall book; I'm still financially digesting the purchases of the French Infantry, Cavalry and Dragoons volumes, which even at P&SS members' prices are still a hit. Your link goes through to the same picture that I found. Blue coated t...

Garde te Paard Question

I am about to paint a cavalry unit to represent the Garde te Paard during the WGA period and I have been thinking about the hats. Wargamers seem to like something unusual and all the images I have found show units wearing various shades of buff hats. Sapherson* says that the regiment wore buff hats ...

Re: A few questions on BLB3

I was prompted to move into this period by the fabulous figures in the Pendraken range. To avoid the 'anaemic' looks suggested by Clarence, you will need to scale down the base sizes or the figures will be too spaced out, for want of a better expression. I worked on using two/thirds of the 15mm size...

Re: Victory without Quarter 10mm basing

My ECW units are made up with Pendraken figures and I opted to base them on the base sizes suggested for 15mm (i.e. half the recommended 28mm base sizes) and pack on the figures. I thought that most of the battles I was going to fight would be smallish affairs of maybe 5-6 foot and 3-4 horse on each...
