Re: Green stuff

Nine days would be very short. Might happen if it was kept in a warm place? Best kept in the freezer when not in use. Should last for months. Try mixing different ratios of yellow to blue to see if that helps. From memory the more blue the less sticky? I never could get on with it all that well. Aft...

Re: Garde te Paard Question

No colour, but a good zoomable image of an engraving; https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/zoeken/objecten?q=boyne&p=4&ps=12&st=Objects&ii=0#/RP-P-OB-79.460,36 Gardes are in the bottom right corner marked "9". I have seen colour versions of this image, but they are crude colourings that are clearly incorre...

Re: Swedish Officers wearing karpus hats?

My understanding is officers stuck to hats. In fact I read this again the other day, but can't recall the source, could have been a TMP thread. I wouldn't be lead by what appears in miniature ranges; I've seen AWI British grenadier standard bearers too many times now. Could the officer in karpus be ...

Re: Challenge- earliest depiction of Louis XIV dragoon.

Hmmm although the Vinkhuijzen Collection image (made in 1910 apparently) shows the date of 1676, its very clear that it uses the 1686 cartoon as its source, from the arrangement of the the equipment and the dead give away of the little pompom on the top of the bonnet (which I have always thought a b...

Challenge- earliest depiction of Louis XIV dragoon.

Hi, Been looking into the early period of Louis XIV's armies and was struck by the paucity of images of dragoons. We all know the famous image - http://faculty.georgetown.edu/spielmag/docs/legrandsiecle/images/Dragonnades.jpg I can't seem to find anything earlier than that (1686). I know that many w...

Scanian War Swedes and Danes?

Hi all, Wanted to ask people's opinion on Swedish uniforms during the Scanian war. Before anyone gets excited this is not for Warfare Miniatures' purposes. Anyway on the subject of equipment, matchlock armed men probably had cross belts and apostles. Flintlock armed men with cartridge boxes. Hoglund...

Thanks for all the input. I got the Baccus CD and it was pretty useful.

Opinions and info on Prussian uniforms invited.

Hi all, Myself and Barry have been discussing what's next on the GNW menu and we are looking at Danes and Prussians. I have a decent handle on the Danes, but I'm having a harder time with the Prussians. It seems that the infantry pretty much followed the standard style for most European armies and w...

Here's an unexpected source. French Soldiers in Siam in the late 17th Century. One clearly in tricorn the other not. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/French_soldiers_in_Siam_17th_century.jpg Yet another possible branch for the period; French vs Siamese 1688. https://en.wikipedia.o...

Re: Regiment de le roi/curassier du roi

My understanding is that they are distinct regiments, du Roi (as in Régiment du Roi; the King's regiment) was established in the 1630's and the cuirassiers du Roi were formed in the 1660s. I think the blue faced red may be indicative of the King's livery. Neither is to be confused with the Régiment ...

Re: Composition of the English/Scots and Jacobite Regiments

Another thing to bear in mind is that the number of pikemen in this period was much reduced as compared to the ECW, so that a battalion has too few to engage in Push of Pike . One can imagine highlanders, who presumably are at least as smart as horses, not charging full pelt into levelled pikes, eit...

Re: Composition of the English/Scots and Jacobite Regiments

Hmm, I doubt it; Montrose's highlanders were able to overrun pike armed covenanters 50 years before without hindrance. Though obviously a look at the weapons inventories if available would be definitive.

Re: helmets for pikemen

The likelihood is that helmets were disappearing by the later 1680s, but at a stretch you can include them in German and Swiss regiments in the French army which were among the last to give them up. Outside of France a morrion type helmet was more likely in pikemen that had helmets, but again they a...
