Re: Did cavalry use pistols in NYW?

The Swedish tactic at the Battle of Lund in 1676 was to charge with pistol in hand and fire when they could see “the whites of the enemy’s eyes.” The sword was then drawn in the melee. This was specifically referred to as “in the French manner.” Yes but the date when the Carolean reforms were intro...

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

Its true that many battle painters were not there, but van Meulen was painting for the king and probably wanted to get it right. I agree that many general officers may have worn a version of the uniform of regiments that they owned, and this is a good default to follow, absent any contradicting evid...

Re: Did generals have uniforms?

If you google paintings of Louis XIV by van Meulen, you will find numerous paintings of battles and sieges from the period, which show officers dress.

Re: Flag Size

As already said, the Saxon flags “in real life” were larger than the Swedish, Danish and Russian flags. I have my Swedish flags sized at 30mm on the hoist.

Re: Stockholm

The army museum is a must. Lots of uniforms, flags and artillery from the 30 Years War through 1809. The Livrustkammer (sp?) in the Royal Palace has Gustavus Adophus’ stuffed horse, his bloody shirt, etc. and Charles XII’s uniform that he was wearing when he was killed, at least I think the latter i...

Re: Swedish artillerymen uniforms during the Scania War

According to Hoglund they had gray coats with blue linings and gray hats in 1675. In 1677 in the Eda redoubt the men had gray coats with blue linings and blue karpueses. The ncos has blue coats. In 1678 costs were of gray and blue cloth.

Re: Helion No 26 Swedish Army in GNW

I just finished a quick read. Overall a nice introduction to the subject. The descriptions of the selected battles are nicely done, although relatively brief. I noticed some errors in the battle descriptions, at least based on other sources I’ve read. The uniform plates are very nice, but I didn’t s...

Re: Helion No23 Russian Army in GNW

I agree, whole-heartedly. This book should be owned by anyone who is interested in wargaming the GNW. It it is not a narrative history of the war, but it contains all most people will need concerning, organization, recruitment, weapons, uniforms, flags, tactics, etc. Lots of info that I, at least, h...
