Re: Early Petrine Army

Found some information. According to Ospreys "Armies of the Ivan the Terrible: Russian Troops - 1505-1700", the Gordon regiment (renamed Butyrski) wore red caftans (Russian style coats) after 1689.

No problem. Slight correction. The Lisboa regiment had light blue coats with white lace.

Re: Portuguese Uniforms help needed

I used to have Condrays book but I lost it. I remember some details though. The reason for the late of information on this is the Lisbon Earthquake and tsunami in 1755 which destroyed a lot of it. What does exist seem to be largely in private collections. The Campo Maior regiment wore blue coat with...

Re: Early Petrine Army

Thanks for sources. It does seem very difficult to get concrete information on this shadowy period in Russian military history. Regarding the "reiters". I know that they were probably introduced as cuirassiers (ECW style) during the reign of Mikhail or Alexei. What isnt clear is whether this was sti...

Re: Garde Suisse detachment in Ireland

I had an Osprey book on the Williamite campaign in Ireland which I have lost. I dont recall reading about the Gardes Suisses being present, though at least one Swiss regiment (not part of the Gardes Suisses) called the Famechon regiment was present during the campaign, I think including the Battle o...

Early Petrine Army

I am having some difficulty getting information on Peter the Great's army before the Great Northern War. I have read Osprey but it says that details on this army are sketchy and that most of the army was disbanded after the regent Sophia's failed coup in 1682. It does seem that the army became more ...

Re: Scania War Danish grenadier cap badge

Some Danish grenadiers would have worn broad brimmed hats at this time. In Ireland Danish grenadiers in the Williamite campaign of 1689-91 did so. What is your source for this statement? For the first or second sentence? For the first one there is the image I linked to, which I understand relates t...

Re: French uniforms

I think the 1660s were a period of transition to grey uniforms which took until the 1670s to complete. Some units seem to have worne brown uniforms in the 1660s, for example the Carignan-Salieres regiment which was sent to Canada in 1665 wore brown coats with I think grey cuffs. Mercenary regiments ...

Re: Saxon uniforms in NYW?

Thanks Dan Schorr. Do you have any information on whether the cuirassiers kept the lobster-helmet in the 1690s, and also when the matchlock was replaced with the flintlock? Also any information on dragoon uniforms?

Re: French Guard flags

Yes the white flags are the Senior flags as in The King's or 1st battalion and then 2 coloured flags the 2nd battalion had just 3 coloured flags or in battle maybe just 1? But guards says each "Company" had a flag just wondered if they were ALL identical or different abit like the English company f...

Some Danish grenadiers would have worne broad brimmed hats at this time. In Ireland Danish grenadiers in the Williamite campaign of 1689-91 did so. In this image which I think is from the Scanian war period, the grenadier is the third man from the right. Some grenadiers wore cloaks called cassocks o...

Re: French Guard flags

This blog here has these Gardes Francaises flags at the start of Louis XV's reign in 1715. There seems to have been 18 fleur de lys in each corner (with a white cross dividing the flag into four corners) for one version of the flag with a blue background, but not for the other version with has a whi...

Re: German states: Dates of flintlock adoption?

Would militias have kept the matchlock and pike for a while after the regular army switched the flintlock and bayonet?
