Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

The simple answer is Yes, the background detail is still valid in regard to equipment, tactics and regimental makeup etc, there is unfortunately very little available information of the state of the English establishment from the abdication of James II until the army was sent to Ireland under Willi...

Re: The Army of James II (Helion)

With respect to the Army after James abandoned the throne - this doesn't, I'm afraid form any real part of the book and is simply mentioned in the blurb but here are some thoughts (and quite open to debate on this one). :) ) Could this book still be of use in understanding the general practices of ...

Re: The Low Countries (What was the big fuss all about?)

Oh and to keep a buffer state in place isn't a uncommon thing between oppressive neighbors, i.e., Saxony If the hapsburgs and Fredrick the great wanted to keep Saxony and the commonwealth separated then you're probably right. The cloth trade is definitely a good factor. I believe the expulsion of E...

The Low Countries (What was the big fuss all about?)

After watching this video of a theory regarding the outcome of the divisions of Charlemagne's empire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ1jkjfRKJM and a topic that was brought up in a recent In Our Time podcast about the Congress of Vienna made think about how the Low countries have been a scene of co...

Re: Waist Sashes for French Pikeman (First post)

I think in the French army, stockings were often the same colour as the cuffs. When I painted these lot I didn't rally have a particular regiment in mind nor too much knowledge on uniform colours. I was just thinking about something that was on the lines being compatible with any generic infantry o...

Re: A few questions on BLB3

1. You play with 15mm models easily by substituting all measurements in the book... simply replace inches for movement and shooting with cm. I would do the same with 10mm, using the 15mm scale bases, but just include more figures on a stand. Basing is not prescriptive - just use what is aesthetical...

Re: Waist Sashes for French Pikeman (First post)

Thanks, I ended up painting them white although at the moment they are just being regarded as a generic infantry until I decide what to do with them. I have seen those osprey plates and the Douglas regiment seem to be wearing sashes that match their regiment cuff colour. Interest plates you sent eve...

Re: A few questions on BLB3

Thanks Clarence I was also wondering about if there 1. are any mentions about adjusting the rules for a smaller scales like 15mm and 10mm as well having some basing suggestions? Those Pendraken LOA miniatures are really tempting. 2. Are the casualties scores still based on every 6 figures per stand(...

A few questions on BLB3

Hi Barry and Clarence, just had a few questions in relation to whats been mentioned on the LOA blog. 1. You mentioned about some supplements for other conflicts during this period. Will ones like the GNW be included in main rule book with instructions on how to adapt this to the rules? If not will t...

Re: 15mm GNW Project

At the moment, I am planning on trying to follow the number of regiments at Poltava as well as using the regiment flags available on the LOA as my guide for numbers.

Re: First appperance of Tricorns in military dress?

Looking at Barry's danish battalions in the gallery, it might not be out of place to have tricot not wearing troops in Ireland and elsewhere.

Re: First appperance of Tricorns in military dress?

Some plates show Bavarians in tricornes as early as 1685ish. This is an old chestnut question that haunts the halls of the period. The pinning is just that, brim pinned up. Not very robust and probably the fashion of one, two or three sides was tried variously down Interesting, I have often seen on...

First appperance of Tricorns in military dress?

It seems that in most models the hats serve as the main distinguishing feature in separating Augsburg era troops to Succession era troops. From what what I have seen in the Osprey panels by Francis Back, Tricorns seem to have been worn in the latter stages of the Nine Years war. Does this mean that ...
