Re: The French Regiments in Ireland Post Ireland

I have no idea where the 1687 date comes from as it doesn't match any referenced and reliable account - and we know for certain that Zurlauben acquired the Walloon Lallemant regiment in 1685. It is always possible that the regiment's Walloon character was fading away by 1687 and Zurlauben was replen...

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

Good catch, Motorway . I already had the GoogleBooks version, so didn't even think of having a look at Gallica - which I should do more often.

Re: The French Regiments in Ireland Post Ireland

Very interesting Arthur! you must have a phoneline back to Louis XIV The line's a bit busy sometimes, Lou's been grumpy lately and those damn carrier pigeons are nowhere near as reliable as they used to be... Well, that and a few books on the subject, which help a bit as well  Actua...

Re: The French Regiments in Ireland Post Ireland

Hello Arthur, I take it most of these regiments were disbanded after the WSS? Edward Only one of them if you except Zurlauben, actually : Mérode became the Tournon regiment shortly upon its return from Ireland and was commanded by a Sieur de Pasquier de Tournon. The regiment was disbanded in 1698 a...

Re: The French Regiments in Ireland Post Ireland

Captain I posted info on the regiments previously (not sure where) but this is it again. I thought I would try and identify the French regiments, I found the the following in Susane (sometimes has errors) La Marche 1047 V8-229 - Boyne Tournaisis 1044 V8-225 - no Irlande mentioned Forez 1042 V8-222 ...

Re: The French Regiments in Ireland Post Ireland

Yes, their whereabouts after Ireland are fairly well documented : * Zurlauben (Walloon) : served in Flanders 1692-1697 where it fought at Steinkirk and Neerwinden. In Italy 1701, then Germany 1703-1704. Destroyed at Bleinheim where its colonel was killed and the regiment was disbanded as a result. *...

Re: OOB for French Forces at Landen/Neerwinden?

Chiming in a bit late, though I'm afraid I do not have a full Neerwinden orbat in my saddlebags. There have been a couple of threads on the subject on this very forum before, none of them too conclusive. Beware the French OOB provided in the link below as it is downright dodgy : it omits units which...

Re: Regiment d'Humieres

Hi Andy Be my guest if you want to use the stuff I posted above on your blog - I merely compiled it from a variety of sources anyway. If you're curious about it, the regimental history bit comes from Louis Susane's Histoire de l'ancienne infanterie française (which also was Mark Allen's main source ...

Re: Regiment d'Humieres

Hi Andy There were two D'Humières infantry regiments during the reign of Louis XIV : the first one belonged to Nicolas de Crevant, marquis d'Humières and it bore the name of its colonel-proprietor from 1677 to 1684 when D'Humières got himself killed at the siege of Luxembourg. After his death, the r...

http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i414/arthurs-account/scan0009_zps86c60015.jpg L'Art Militaire Français was published in 1696, but Giffart's figures most likely date back a few years - the late 1680's probably, shortly after the new blue uniform was introduced in 1685. Charrié does indeed point ...

Re: french 1690 uniform details

As Dan says, the drapeaux d'ordonnance were not differentiated and were all identical. Also bear in mind that not all Colonel's colours were plain white with a white cross on a white background : some actually featured coloured/golden devices or mottos - and sometimes both. Re the cravats/scarves, I...

Re: French Flags - tassels and Cravats in 1693?

As stated above, the cravates were adopted after the battle of Fleurus because of the casualties incurred there from 'friendly' fire. According to Pierre Charrié (THE leading expert on French flags), it was a while before their use became universal and some units may not have added them to their fla...

Re: WARFARE GARDES FRANCAISES - NEWS IS OUT HERE!

Very elegant figures :D

Do you have a potential release date for the dismounted French dragoon command pack, Barry ? I vaguely remember reading that Clibinarium was supposed to sculpt them right after the troopers, but I'm not sure my recollection is 100% correct.

Re: North Star's French Infantry Uniforms

This type of coat was extremely popular in France in the late 1660's, when it replaced the much shorter bolero-style jacket worn with baggy trousers : http://a402.idata.over-blog.com/2/68/84/23/ImagesArticles/1660-Louis-XIV.-Infanterie-Francaise.-Soldat.-Officiers.jpg The cuffs were originally place...
