Re: Cavalry - number of belts

Yes, I completely agree, David. The switch to the new belting arrangement was ordered in late 1683, so I imagine it took a good five to six years - even possibly more - to see it fully implemented, with the new accoutrements gradually replacing the old ones. It is difficult to come up with hard evid...

Re: Ebor miniatures new charging Horse

As many period illustrations will attest, French cavalry did not use cartridge boxes, Simon. The following engraving by Parrocel shows a Garde du Corps trooper from behind, and it is quite clear that he doesn't have one : http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i414/arthurs-account/8MaisonDuRoiGardeDuCo...

I wouldn't, for the reasons detailed in the link below :

The crossbelts were no longer used by French cavalry after the 1680's..

Re: Cavalry - number of belts

I'll start with the French army, which is what I know best. French troopers of horse initially wore crossbelts until the early 1680's as shown in the illustration below reproduced by René Chartrand in his Osprey MAA on the army of Louis XIV : http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i414/arthurs-account/...

Re: Ebor miniatures new charging Horse

Hi Simon

Long story short, the cockade is fine for French troops, the crossbelts aren't. Maciek started a thread on cavalry accoutrements a few days ago and I meant to post a reply, but haven't had the time so far. I will do so tomorrow (with pictures), so all will be revealed then

Re: Converged Grenadiers

The phrase 'converged grenadiers' refers to the practice of removing the grenadier companies from their respective infantry battalions and forming them into temporary or permanent elite units. The practise doesn't seem to have been used much during the Nine Years War and the War of the Spanish Succe...

Re: french 1690 uniform details

Sorry, chiming in a bit late. Earlier in the C17th, each infantry company carried its own standard. However, a royal ordinance dated June 22 1671 reduced the number of flags to three per battalion. An infantry battalion carried one white (colonel's) and two coloured (known as ordonnance ) flags. In ...

Re: Ebor miniatures new charging Horse

I think they are suitable for French and Spanish horse by the look of it but am sure they could be used for other nations also. Hmm, the crossbelts look decidely un-French to me, and the figures are also lacking the aiguillette almost universally worn by French troopers on the right shoulder. But I...

If you mean French grenadiers, then yes, Front Rank offers the largest selection of poses. Ebor also have some very nice French grenadiers in tricorns, both with and without lace :

Re: 1672 figures- a question of fashion

You could use some but not all of them. The Anglo-Dutch musketeers would work well for those units which had not yet made the transition from the crossbelts to the more modern waistbelt/shoulder belt combo (the Dutch Foot Guards are often depicted wearing the crossbelts at the Boyne). GS01, 02, 15 &...

Re: Lots of Dragoon news

Arthur, do you have any info regarding colour of these knots, were they the same as the cuffs etc. Cheers Bob I know I am no expert like most of the others here but may it be that the 'knots' are of the Lining/Lace color? Yes Gunther, many sources show ribbons/knots in the button colour and they wo...

Re: Lots of Dragoon news

Yes, you can. Dragoon accoutrements did not change significantly between 1690 and 1715, nor did the general appearance of their uniform. The shoulder knots/ribbons also seem to have been retained by French dragoons after the infantry stopped wearing them in the mid/late 1690's. Not all period pics s...

Having seen the pic, I second that emotion :D

Will definitely be getting some when they are released. Do you have an ETA for the French dragoon command pack Clibinarium is currently working on ?
