Re: Sir Ralph Dutton regiment of foot

Don't know about more expertise, but these are websites that I tend to go to for such information:- http://wiki.bcw-project.org/royalist/foot-regiments/sir-ralph-dutton http://www.wargamesdesigns.com/history.html I would consider the former more reliable than the latter, if there is a clash of data....

Re: Battle of Abu Klea (Sudan)

I suspect I'd have rather more trouble learning it now, at 56, than I did back then (especially as the shool library was full of G A Henty novels and similar boys' own stuff of which I was an avid reader).

Re: Battle of Abu Klea (Sudan)

The British defensive square included a new Gardiner gun manned by the Naval Brigade that jammed during the battle. A massive rush by the Mahdist warriors ensued and broke the square but intense fire from troops in the rear drove them out and into a retreat from the field. Rudyard Kipling commemora...

Re: 28mm pistols in holsters

Front Rank do flintlock pistols; you'll have to "putty up" the actual holster, though.

Re: WARFARE PRIVATE COMMISSIONS - WHAT INTERESTS YOU?

Only just noticed this thread - I trust it hasn't been replaced by another one that I also haven't found yet! I've had a quick look through the previous pages, and hopefully this won't duplicate anything that has gone before. My interest is 28mm late-era armies for Field of Glory Renaissance (Duty &...

Re: Swedish King Charles XI - command stand

Just seen this blog for the first time - the model of Copenhagen harbour was simply amazing.

What colours did you use for Charles' coat? It's that difficult-to-describe tone that is not quite grey, and not quite brown either.

On the other hand, August Kühn is his booket, “The Army of Max Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria” describes and illustrates an entirely different standard for the Hartschiere in 1701. “A standard of yellow damask with golden fringes and rich golden ornamentation. On the obverse a curcifix with Jesus and ...

Colour of gun carriages for Savoy and Spain?

Anyone know what colour the gun carriages (and possibly limbers, caissons and other vehicles) of the Piedmont-Savoy and Imperial Spanish armies were in the 1680-1700 period? I have my suspicions, but would like to hear from the experts - especially those with language skills who've read non-English ...

Lineage of Bavarian infantry regiments (1680-1700)

Can anyone provide links between the following groups of regiments? I have pretty good records for the cavalry and dragoons, but not for the infantry. Thanks. Early 1680s - Puech - Montfort - Steinau - Rummel - Preysing - La Rosa Mid-Late-1690s - Leib - Kurprinz - Harthausen/Mercy - Maffei - Lutzenb...

Re: Facing Color for the 5th Foot?

Notes-For defeating a French division of Grenadiers at Wilhelmstahl in 1762 it was granted the privilege of wearing Fusilier caps and also a white plume for gallantry at St.Lucia. These caps became a source of contention during the American War of Independence, when the 5th wore theirs at a Royal b...

Re: Facing Color for the 5th Foot?

In Elizabethan times it was known as "goose turd green" if that helps to fix the colour in your head. During the Napoleonic Wars, the then Colonel of the regiment hated it so much that he had the drummers and other musicians put into white coats, rather than the usual reversed colours (also, the ser...

Re: Bavarian Infantry 1690s 1700s

Is it possible that the "grey" coats are simply faded blue ones?

I only ask because there are some contemporary murals in Bavarian (one of the palaces, I think) that show late 17th Century troops in what are clearly blue coats, but much lighter/greyer than the richer blue associated with the period.
