Re: Simple soldier's equipment ...Army equipment 1700-1720

Were any of the above cavalry regiments hired out to the Dutch Republic in the first half (1688-1693) of the War of the League of Augsberg before France's treaty with Sweden. No, the provincial regiments with ethnic Swedes and Finns stayed home. I do not have much knowledge about the Swedish regime...

Re: Sample Army list for Russia

I have encountered some conflicting information about Russian pikes. The most reliable source states however that every eight man in a Russian regiment was a pikeman during the Russian campaign 1707-09. All of these were allocated to the battalion's front rank of which they made up 50 %. The pike wa...

Re: GNW Swedish grenadiers

The brass plate in the last picture has been incorrectly attributed to the Guard by the Armémuseum. The Guard grenadiers actually had tricornes and not grenadier caps so this plate could not belong to them. Höglund speculates that it instead belonged to the Saxon regiment (which consisted of former ...

Re: GNW Swedish grenadiers

There was also an independent grenadier battalion, raised in 1716 and disbanded 1719. It participated in the Norwegian campaign of 1718. In the battle of Narva the Swedish infantry attacked in columns. Each column was spearheaded by a grenadier platoon. The largest body of infantry was spearheaded b...

Re: GNW Swedes Officer sash color?

It looks like the officer's coat in those photos is based on lieutenant Carl Wilhelm Drakenhielm's coat from the Norwegian campaign in 1718, which is the only preserved Swedish uniform from the Great Northern War other than those worn by royalties. It may however not be a typical example of a Swedis...

Re: GNW Swedes Officer sash color?

Swedish officers did not have any sashes. A substitute for sashes could have been their belts which may have been covered with blue cloth and laced with gold. Atleast the Guard had that arrangement and gold laces on the belts are mentioned for other regiments officers. As a matter of fact it does no...

Re: Russian uniforms at Narva (November 1700)

The colour plate from Höglund's book portray the Närke-Värmland regiment dressed in the so called "older karoliner uniform". But as I mentioned before, Höglund no longer believe that the older uniform was ever used by the Swedish army. The following picture show how the older and the younger karolin...

Re: Russian uniforms at Narva (November 1700)

Höglund gives a number of regiments supposedly at Narva that were raised in 1700 as having "coats" in that year. The two guard regiments and Butyriski (Gordon till 1705) and Lefort are given as having caftans and caps with fur linings in 1698. Tje Guards and Butyriski/Gordon have descriptions of We...
