John Mollo, RIP

John Mollo, author of a number of books on military history and uniforms, and costume designer/consultant on several films, has died in a care home in Wiltshire, England, on October 25th.  He was 86 and the older brother of Andrew and Boris.   Given the age of many of us on here, I would suspect tha...

Nice to see you didn't succumb to the debatable "lilac leisure suit" look.

Re: Uniforms for Ramillies

Hi, Gardes de Cologne - Bavarian blue coats; red cuffs/lining; white waistcoat and breeches; grey stockings; black neckcloth; yellow buttons and hat lace; cockade white/blue. Gardes de Baviere (assuming this is merely a French translation of the name) - Bavarian blue coats, waistcoats and breeches; ...

Re: The Bavarian Army During the Thirty Years War, 1618-1648

I had been looking forward to this, but an early (anonymous, which can sometimes be suspicious, but not always) review* states that the author has written very little that is specifically about the Bavarian army itself but the text is full largely of generalities covering all armies of the period, w...

Re: No colours for the fusiliers?

I was going to say that the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (ordnance regiment) formed in 1685, and later the 7th Foot, had colours from the start. It consisted of a red cross on a white field, with cannons and other military paraphernalia coming out of the four corners where the arms of the cross inter...

chema - Thank you very much for your reply to my question about the Spanish horse regiment at Tangiers. Very useful. Also, I couldn't help noticing the "Dragon de Sheldon" image. Was this regiment "imported" from Ireland originally? I ask because there was a "Sheldon's Horse" in the French army from...

Re: My personal project... Sculpting Spanish for Late 17 cen

Chema - On a slight tangent, I don't suppose you have any details for the Duke of Osuna's cavalry regiment, which served briefly with the British garrison at Tangiers in 1680? I think they wore white/off-white/grey coats, but have nothing more.

Thank you.

Anyone help with some basic uniform details?

I'm looking for basic uniform details (coat colour, facings, breeches, hat - and horse furniture where appropriate) for two foot, one horse, and artillery for each of any TWO small German states which would have been allied with Bavaria/Austria c.1690. This is to generate two small allied contingent...

Re: Hall CD "Armies of Hanover, Celle & Brunswick 1670-1715"

Yes, I have it. To my relatively untutored eye, it looks very good. The price is quite high, certainly compared to other CDs from Baccus, but the information is difficult to obtain and seems to be comprehensive.

Now delayed until April 15th - albeit reduced to £17.95 (from £19.95).

Hoping to collect a copy from Caliver at Salute the following week.

Re: Question (for Gunter?) on Saxon cuirassiers

Roger and Gunter,

Thank you very much, that was exactly the information I was looking for. (Just to be clear, the "Collar" is the name of the entire garment, not just the bit that goes around the neck, often referred to as a "cape" in the 18th Century - yes?)
