Re: Irish Bits 1689 etc

The Origin and services of the Coldstream Guards Volume II has an appendix with the stations of the regiment from its raising in 1650 until the time the book was written. In March 1689, the complete regiment, 17 companies in two battalions, was ordered to proceed to Holland. Three companies were red...

Re: What are the essential books for this period?

Hello Simon, Regarding the English army, the best scholarly account is found in John Childs trilogy (Charles II, James II and William III). He has also written excellent accounts on the operations of the British army in Flanders 1689-97 and the Williamite War in Ireland 1689-91. A recent work by Gal...

Re: Irish Bits 1689 etc

I know that several authors put some of the Guards on the Boyne, often collectively as 'English Guards', but without proper referencing I am always doubtful. For example, the Calendar of Treasure Books, nor the Calendar of State Papers, does not indicate English Guards were in Ireland (except for Ho...

Re: Irish Bits 1689 etc

Not much of a flag specialist, but more interested in orders of battles. How certain is the presence of the Coldstream Guards on the Boyne, or in Ireland between 1689-91? From what I know is that the only foot guards present in the Williamite line-up were the Dutch Garde te Voet and the Danish foot ...

Re: Danish cavalry in Ireland

If I am not mistaken, these three regiments were formed with drafts taken from regular Danish regiments of horse.

According to the army estimates for the year 1691, each of the three regiments was composed of 6 troops with 270 men in total.

Re: Jame II Irish Guards - One or Two Battalions

Hello Dannie, As you could read on my blog, the pre-Revolution Irish Guards contained just 13 companies. As it were large companies, it could count for two battalions (when the Irish Guards were raised in 1662 it was about 1200 men). With the companies, as a battalion, going to England in October 16...

Re: smaller german states (ratings)

Hi wdrenth, It was I and not Dave who used the Scots regiment as a example. Hello Ray, My mistake, I meant to comment on your comment of course! Some time ago I posted some thoughts on the early history of the Royal Scots: http://britisharmylineages.blogspot.nl/2011/09/royal-scots-some-thoughts.htm...

Re: smaller german states (ratings)

Hello all, The popular view of German states hiring out their soldiers is one of trading soldiers as cannon fodder for gold. However, this view is far too simplistic. Peter Wilson, know for this TYW book, wrote another book, German Armies: War and German Society, 1648-1806, that covers the subject p...

Re: Blenheim OOB

As for an order of battle on Blenheim, have you considered Dalton's Blenheim roll that is printed in English Army Lists and Commission Registers Volume 5 ? It is available at http://archive.org/details/englisharmylist03daltgoog and gives a full list of officers, with details on wounded, dead, how mu...

Re: Blenheim OOB

To add to Motorway's reply, the number of English national troops present in the Low Countries between 1701 and 713 was never larger than about 25,000 men (20-22 battalions and a similar number of squadrons). True, England had in pay a multiple of that number as subsidy troops, but that was also tru...

Re: Walloon and Flemish regiments?

Henry de Caris became colonel of another regiment in 1723, until his death in 1736: http://www.milwiki.nl/dutchregiments/index.php?n=RepInf.IR600a This is probably the regiment referred to by Motorway. This was another regiment than the one raised by Caris in late 1702, and part of the augmentation ...

Re: Walloon and Flemish regiments?

These three Walloon regiments of foot, together with a regiment of dragoons, formed part of an augmentation to the Anglo-Dutch forces operating in the Low Countries in 1703 (given commitment and resources allocated it would be more just to refer to Dutch-and-some-Anglo forces 8) ). This augmentation...

I have taken liberty to add a list of British regiments at Neerwinden to my blog. In this post I have commented on the aforementioned wiki. I have also used better understandable regimental names  . Please see http://britisharmylineages.blogspot.com/2012/05/battle-of-neerwinden-29-july-1693.ht...
