Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

If *I* were painting the unit, I'd paint them with green facings, yes. But I would paint the drummer in the livery that Robert Hall provides, so they would be red too, but with drummer's lace (not sure where to put it, but around the cuffs, up and down the sleeves, the edges of the false sleeves if ...

Re: Regiment DILLON at Turin, 1706

I would be skeptical of the reversed colors on Lee. The reference is to Condray rather than a contemporary source. That's not to say Condray is wrong, but it would be interesting to know if he actually has a contemporary source of just through in the wargamers street knowledge of musicians wearing r...

Should the musicians' livery for French royal regiments (such as Royal Italien) be the royal livery?

Re: Dismounted dragoons

First of all the Boyne, it was Colonel Sir Niall O'Neill's dragoon regiment that defended the ford at Rossnaree against Count Schomberg's flanking column. Ray. I'm trying to figure out how they were fighting, was it skirmishing or did they form ranks like regular infantry but not as well? The Frenc...

language of command?

Thinking about armies in our period and how many different languages must have been present in an army, I wonder, what was the language of command? I guess I wouldn't be surprised if most of the generals spoke French though I think it was a little later when it was fashionable for every educated per...

french livery resource?

Is there a resource giving information about liveries of French families in this period?

I've done some online searching with nothing useful.

My immediate concern is liveries for Gondrin, but a broad resource is what I'm interested in.

The article also deals with cavalry tactics, cavalry armour and the switch from matchlck to flintlock. You can find the article HERE Nice artic...

I've heard the Olaf van Nimwegen is helping out some with the new Robert Hall book on the Dutch army. Tell me more!! :o :D Is this likely to be similar to the previously published uniform books by Robert Hall & others? Cheers, Rohan. I've heard the Olaf van Nimwegen is helping out some with the new Robert Hall book on the Dutch army. Is the Het Staates work available online anywhere? I'd love to have something I could cut and paste into Google translate. Your rampjaar blog is awesome, thanks for putting the work into it and cont...
