French uniforms

Silly question but French coats are grey, but I've seen paintings were they don't look grey at all it's more of a dirty beige cream colour. Is this colour the real colour of the coats or is it just the pictures and paintings inks or oils that have faded to this dirty colour?.

Thanks

Lee

Re: German states: Dates of flintlock adoption?

I know The Danes had whole regiments armed with them in 1690s, so probably at the same time? The French took longer as to why I don't know maybe they were just as good the matchlocks so why pay more for flintlocks? As the saying goes don't fix anything that ain't broke

Re: uniform identification help

Yellowish coats could be Danish guards then but don't think they used pikes by that period I think they were all flintlock armed

Re: uniform identification help

Blue and orange cuffs regiment maybe Dutch Guards?

Purple coats maybe Spanish regiments?

Yellow maybe Spanish or Swiss?

Dragoon maybe Spanish or French dragoons du roi?

If you can get pictures up will be clearer as to spanish or french

But I lean more to spanish regiments

Re: Monmouth Rebellion help

Maybe 2 pikes due to lack of muskets? I'm assuming as it was a rebel force it would be poorly supplied in military grade equipment unless they managed to raid depots along the way? I think the battle was a total destruction so probably very little fire arms and training.

Re: Basing 2 or 3 ranks for French?

The pike base is for earlier wars such as 9 years war, pike is gone by War Spanish Succession from virtually all armies so just the 3 bases. I think 3 or 2 ranks is visual aesthetics 3 gives them a beefear look and 2 keeps the price down and less to paint just your personal preference I suppose.

Re: Waist Sashes for French Pikeman (First post)

White sashes were also worn by English pikemen to make it more confusing so white wasn't just for the French

Re: Waist Sashes for French Pikeman (First post)

I've always done them as white, they would be of poor quality though compared to the officers finery with gold or silver tassels or threads.

Re: Opinions and info on Prussian uniforms invited.

Look amazing even without the heads! and buttons lots of shinny buttons to paint, I think once you paint them it makes the figures uniform stand out more if you know what I mean.
