Re: The Dutch Blue Guard and a Papal Banner..

Interesting thread.... Wienand - As always you've hit the nail on the head. Pragmatism and not philanthropy was William's "P" word !! Despite the internvening centuries the only thing that drove William wasn't his Faith or indeed that of his nemesis Louis XIV but rather the annexation by France of t...

Re: French in Ireland

Tim,

I used the figures cited in the transcripts of the original French correspondence, edited by Sheila Mulloy for the Irish Manuscripts Commission.

Re: Dutch Guard attack at Ramillies

Maciek, oddly enough one of my current writing projects at the moment is a book on Ramillies...Am still awaiting my copy of the Litten book, but after the initial research my take on the villages is that they were similar to the Round Tops at Gettysburg - unimportant until the enemy tried taking the...

Re: Dutch army 1688

Motorway has the right of it.

Transitional, but with the more high profile units having the better kit.

Take the English - When William disbanded the last of James' foot regiments he put all of the equipment in storage and had to reissue it to his own newly raised troops for 1689/90.

Re: Danish Cavalry Uniforms & Banners

Mark, ref coat colours I think the various sources are trying to recreate the sort of cloth known by the French as "gris-mêle". Basically it's a white cloth shot through with a greyish blue thread which generates the cloth referred to as "pale grey", "pearl grey", "light grey" or even "off white"......

Re: Jacobite Foot at the Boyne, pike to shot ratios

Both my Boyne and Aughrim books should contain a summary of what was shipped. Majority of the Jacobite foot wouldn't have had grenadier companies per se - most of the weapons being reserved for defensive purposes in any event.

Re: bonnet wearing infantery in ireland?? 1690s

No problem, it's a good description and helps me to envisage them. Crossbelts seem odd as this would imply flintlocks and would (given tne nationality) potentially take them out of 1689. For wargamng purposes would suggest that you've got two main options a) paint them up as governmental militia so ...

Re: bonnet wearing infantery in ireland?? 1690s

Well, basically Scotland.... Having said that (and as I wrote at length in another thread) you could combine them with a Jacobite Irish force if you work from James II's own plans for 1689 - He wanted to mask Derry and then move the better elements of the army to Scotland to link up with his partisa...

Re: bonnet wearing infantery in ireland?? 1690s

Thanks Clibinarium,

also redshanks - once believed by many to refer to the "fact" that Antrim's regiment went barelegged is actually now accepted to be a derogatory comment based upon the clan split between the MacDonnell's in Ulster and the Mc/MacDonald's in Scotland....

And of course that the unit is described in the Diary of John Stevens and if they were wearing anything out of the ordinary, give the detail in the rest of his work, he would have noted it.

Re: bonnet wearing infantery in ireland?? 1690s

Blücher, would base my comments on a) that they are in "highland kit" whilst the regiment was raised in Ireland and not Scotland and b) that - with the dispersal of companies as detailed in the Franco-Irish correspondence - we have a pretty good analysis of the detachments which marched to Derry. Mi...
