Re: French Garde du Corps bandoleers

I've looked at both the Osprey and David Wilson's book : https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=french+army+austrian+wilson It appears that each of the four Company's wore a bandoleer with silk squares in the Company colour, each of which is surrounded with p...

Re: artillery at Ramillies

The Osprey covering Ramillies estimates that the Franco-Spanish army deployed 70 guns. It provides the following estimate: 12 x 16-24 pdrs 20 x 6 - 12 pdrs 38 x 4 pdrs Of these, 40-44 are assumed to be French. I suppose that the critical aspect for wargaming this battle is that Marlborough's army is...

Re: French army of louis xiv

Looking forward to these releases.

This series deserves to be well supported as it is really bringing to life an era which
is normally less well covered. Some excellent books coming up.

Re: Early Petrine Army

I don't have them (yet !), but I imagine that the following books from Helion might be useful : MUSCOVY'S SOLDIERS. THE EMERGENCE OF THE RUSSIAN ARMY 1462-1689: https://www.helion.co.uk/browse-title-series-more/century-of-the-soldier-c-1618-1721/books-in-series/muscovy-s-soldiers-the-emergence-of-th...

Re: The English Expedition to Portugal, 1662-1668

Hi there, I have the book (which is a very good read). My understanding is that there was originally 1 Regiment of Horse (Marquis of Schomberg's, of 8 Troops) plus two Regiments of Foot (Henry Pearson's & Francis Moore's). Jonathon Riley's book confirms that the foot regiments 'wore red coats and we...

Re: French uniforms

This is one of those much-debated subjects that pops up regularly on various forums (fora ?) and can result in much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair. Anyway, my understanding is that, although there would a number of shades, most were off-white /very light cream. Not grey. This post on TMP cove...

I haven't bought the Compendium (yet) but I think they may be taken from this.

Re: Garde te Paard Question

I've had a look at the extensive Robert Hall CD but unfortunately, this just refers back to Lawson. I've also found a second painting by de Hooghe but can't see a large enough version to make out any details : https://www.historyireland.com/early-modern-history-1500-1700/king-billy/ I think the answ...
