Re: Pikemen at Fleurus

Hello gentlemen; All of my sources, admittedly secondary sources, idenify Lewenhaupt as a Swedish regiment in Dutch sevice. It was almost totally destroyed at Fleurus. If Saxony also had a Lewenhaupt, I wonder if there is a family connection. Conflans Yes, they were cousins and they belonged to the...

Re: Question about Danish cuirassiers in the WSS

Dansk biografisk Lexikon (Danish biographical Lexicon) has a scathing review of Vaupell as an historian. The article about Vaupell was written 1905 (six years after his death) and I have translated the relevant section from Danish to English (I did not understand what "Sans" means and if that is so...

Re: Firearms of GNW

The Swedish site Digitalt museum is a good place to find this kind of information about Swedish firearms. http://www.digitaltmuseum.se/search?query=musk%C3%B6t Useful search words are: Musköt = musket Karbin = carbine Pistol = pistol Flintlås = flintlock (as in flintlåsmusköt or flintlåspistol ) Lun...

Re: Question about Danish cuirassiers in the WSS

The article by Torstein Snorrason, which was a part of Dan Schorr's former web site, states that the cuirass was worn over the coat (regardless if it was of cloth or a buff coat). The only exception would be officers with richly embroidered coats who could be seen (for the sake of vanity?) wearing t...

Re: Galloper guns

It was "scientific approach" to artillery, that evolved in 18th century that allowed to design lighter types of barrels, mounted on new, lighter carriages. Finally it led to invention of true "battalion gun" - a light piece, capable of close cooperation with infantry. But it happened half a century...

Re: 36+ Russian GNW Flags now available

The Swedish trophy collection contain a lot more than the twelve m/1700 company colours illustrated in Höglund's book. I stopped counting when I reached a hundred (with several pages left to check). http://www.digitaltmuseum.se/search?query=statens+trof%C3%A9samling+rysk+fana&search_context=1&page=1...

Re: 36+ Russian GNW Flags now available

The references I had for the colonels' flags were white or silver eagles on white fields... I thought that was strange. Making large areas or simple shapes look metallic is easy, but trying to make something as complex as the eagle look metallic at this scale simply ends up obscuring the details. I...

Re: Warfare Swedish Cavalry

Is that not because the majority of Russian cavalry were dragoons and would therefore be on poorer quality horses anyway? Cheers Dave I do not think they had inferior horses just because they were dragoons. It must have been in the best interest of the Russian army to get the highest quality of hor...

Re: Best WARFARE Cuirassier Figure for WSS and GNW Danish Ho

Before 1707 only the Guard and the first Jyske cavalry regiment had cuirasses. 1. Does it apply to both guard horse regiments (Livgardet till häst and Livregementet till häst) ? I got the information by e-mail from Torstein Snorrason (" Op til 1707 har kavaleriet heller ikke kyrasser, bortset fra G...

Re: Best WARFARE Cuirassier Figure for WSS and GNW Danish Ho

Note that the article on the Danish army in Schorr's old website does not state that the cloth coat and buff coat was ever worn at the same time: The Tøjhus Accounts show that leather buff coats had colored cuffs, which were probably smaller than the cuffs on the uniform coat. In 1704 leather buff c...

Re: Warfare Swedish Cavalry

I just found a reference to dragoon horses and it states that they used the larger "klippare" for dragoons (and artillery trains). The maximum height for a klippare would be about 140 cm. Swedish dragoons are generally not well documented in the litterature. Only two dragoon regiments survived the w...

Re: Best WARFARE Cuirassier Figure for WSS and GNW Danish Ho

The information I have is that the kyller/buff coat was used by the Danes in battle. Otherwise the cloth coat was used. The kyller offered better protection in battle but was uncomfortable to wear during campaign as it took very long time for it to dry when it got -. For this reason the Swedes stopp...

Re: Warfare Swedish Cavalry

The book of reference on this subject is "Hästen i det karolinska rytteriet" (= The horse in the Carolean cavalry) by Henry Waxberg from 1973. It is however not so comprehensive as it is mainly focused on the "indelta" cavalry regiments. Therefore I can not say if there was any difference between pr...

Re: Warfare Swedish Cavalry

The other thing of course is that the horses could be considered rather tall for Swedish cavalry. I am currently sourcing mounts for the LoA dragoons and it may be that we go for smaller beasts than these. That depends on which time period you are aiming at. After the battle of Poltava the quality ...
