Re: My Review of the great northern war compendium

I see I'm not the only one who thought so (I hope we are thinking of the same article though). Great books, but yes, some of the English is written in a halting style, like its not the writer's first language (in many cases it will not be) and they haven't quite mastered English "flow", or its been ...

Re: Great Northern War Compendium Book Update

My copy arrived this morning. A quick scan through looks good, will take a bit of reading to assess. I certainly need more books that deal with history and not uniforms (though it has quite a lot of uniform info too).

Re: 1st Foot Guards

This description never made much sense to me, I always imaged they wore fur caps the fur of which might be piebald. To go back to the original description from the diary of John Eveyln, from 1678; Now were brought into service a new sort of soldier called Grenadiers, who were dexterous in flinging h...

Re: Sir, may I have another: Christmas update?

Well I guess I can answer part of that. Russian and Swedish cavalrymen dolls are off being cast up, as are dolls for French and Anglo-Dutch mounted dragoons. More Russian infantry are being worked on (men in kartuz for example), though we will have to have a conversation about grenadier hats here be...

Looks pretty good for a TV production, battles don't look huge, but that's to be expected. I really like the music.

Re: Looking for new Sculpting challenges

OK. :D Maybe look at doing a genuinely comprehensive range for SYW or FPW, like Barry has done for the LoA/GNW period? Unfortunately, many ranges seem to leave the cavalry until last, which tends to make customers nervous about investing in the range, which in turn makes the manufacturer nervous ab...

Re: Uniforms of the Irish Brigade

I've been waiting to see if someone knowledgeable would answer this question, but in the absence of that I'll add my thoughts. The first contingent probably arrived in their English/Irish uniforms. Its likely that on arrival in France uniforms of the contingent of 1691 were in a pretty bad state, (i...

Re: Aughrim,1691. Obscure Jacobite units.

Unfortunately, outside of what was noted by John Stevens, very little is known about the uniforms or flags of the Jacobite army, so they obscure in a literal sense. Its a fair bet that some regiments did not have uniforms, and those that did probably wore red or grey coats, possibly a mix, and unifo...

Re: Grand Prior Grenadier Caps

What we know of the regiment's uniform comes from a entry in John Stevens' journal The Lord Grand Prior's Regiment, thirteen companies ... Clothed in red lined white, all but the drums, who are blue with white and [? ] loops. The Grenadier's white and red loops, their caps with a flaming a city, and...

Re: Here come the Russians

Clib, What is next in line? Dannie Probably next up in the GNW will be more Russian foot; marching and defensive poses, plus troops in karpus. I am anxious to get back to Swedish cavalry, but likely I'll do dolls for both Swedes and Russians in one batch. There will be a bit of a detour before this...

Re: Here come the Russians

Well my rationale for poses was to give both sides standing and marching poses, and then give the Swedes charging poses since that was their preferred tactic, and the Russians firing and defensive poses in response. Of course the Swedes did form firing lines, but the charge seems more emblematic of ...

Re: Louis xiv Swiss guards

Mark Allen gives the Livree du Roi for both Garde regiments, but notes the Gardes Suisses would have had the blue breeches and stockings of the rest of the regiment.
