Varnishing Disaster! Help Urgently Needed Please? (Pic Heavy)

Post by Atheling » Tue Jan 11, 2022 1:21 pm

Warning,- I'm going to name names in this article. I'm at once both distraught and furious! I have never had a varnishing disaster like this before in all my decades of experience.

Help! In order to preserve my dwindling supplies of the superb Winsor and Newton Professional Matt Varnish I ordered some Minibits Deluxe Matt Varnish from Pendraken Miniatures. Five cans in fact. I used this over my normal Humbrol Gloss coat and the results were very satin! A far cry from what I am used to which is a very flat matt I get with the Winsor and Newton Professional Matt Varnish.

I then tried to brush on some matt varnish and it just ran off the model like I was pouring water on!

I had one can of Colourforge Matt Varnish, which I was going to try out on some terrain, and applied it over the Minibits Deluxe Matt Varnish. What you see below is the result! Not only has there been extreme frosting but the varnish has actually cracked on the models!

I am absolutely distraught. As I have said, I have never had such a terrible result with any varnish in all of my painting days which amounts to over two decades- longer if I include my youth!

Normally, if I get a bit of frosting I would re gloss then repeat with the Winsor and Newton Professional Matt Varnish

If anyone has a solution to this please, please contact me and let me know.

Here's the mess:

No chance Jim, it's not just frosting the last layer of varnish has penetrated down to the paint which has caused the layers of paint, gloss, so called Deluxe Matt Varnish to diffuse right down to the paint layers and cause cracking all over all of the models.

Project abandoned for the foreseeable and moved onto more Italian Wars stuff for the Analogue Hobbies painting Challenge. It's a shame really as I spent £374 with Footsore and £173 with Gripping Beast just to have a varnish, which I was promised by the vendor was very flat matt, applied in the correct conditions and using the correct tried and tested methods practiced for decades, devastate the first unit.

It's now boxed and out of sight and out of mind.

I'm just banging on with the start of the Gonzalo de Cordoba army for Cerignola Jim. I'm using The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge as an excuse to plough of after the varnishing bebacle.

I have one unit painted a few months back:

Sword and Bucklers and Pike block to follow.

Ouch! That's horrendous! Have you tried contacting the manufacturer? They might have something useful to say...

Yeah, I got the "It hasn't happened to anyone else and the varnish is very flat matt spiel", even after trying it out again on a new miniature and sending pics. Apologies for blowing my own trumpet, but I've been painting for a very long time and I know what I'm doing. I think my experience trumps the effect of the varnish. It's so frustrating. I spent £50 on varnish I was promised was " a deadflat matt" and it was anything but
