Sri Lanka Painters

Post by MikeWall » Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:59 am

There are a few websites advertising figure painting at very reasonable prices from Companies in Sri Lanka.
I wondered if anyone had tried any of these and if there are any pitfalls, such as hidden costs with customs etc;

The pictures on their galleries look good, so hopefully the quality of work should be adequate for the wargamer and with hordes of figures waiting to march to the Boyne it is very tempting.

Hi Mike,
I was tempted too when I searched for a painter with reasonable prices. But You must think of the following:
Even as they are cheap, even as they are fast there are a lot of DIFFERENT Painters with different Styles that paint your figures there. You wont have a chance to tell them details you want to see on your units.
That was a fair explanation I got from a company who offered the Service of "Big Battalions"! It opened my eyes.
It mean's quite a lot if you have a painter who asks you for the level of detail you want have and after what picture he/she should doing the job!

Thats of course only my opinon on that matter.
I didn't try it so please!

Cheers,
Günter

Hi Gunter, nice to hear from you again,.
These are my concerns as well so I suppose the only thing to do is give one of them a try with a small order, certainly the photo's on their websites are impressive.
Take care

I'd certainly go along withy Gunter's feelings on the topic. If you want a professional job, choose a professional!

I would say that though..... :D

It comes down to cost at the end of the day Darrell. I suspect (or hope!) the painters in Sri Lanka also see themselves as professional.

I saw some very nicely painted Perry Plastic figures at the weekend from a company in the far east. They were consistently tidy, nicely painted and all of a similar style. They were fairly cheap as well. Most of these painting services seem to come in well priced.

We used Fernandos painting service to get lots of 28mm ECW figures painted. They are done to a decent wargames standard and ECW are a mixed lot so tiny details were not done nor asked for. They ask you upfront everything you require, the colors etc. this is where you have to be detailed. They sent pics of test figures to be sure you were happy before they began the mass painting. We were happy with the results we got from them. I cant speak to their showcase standards.

Thanks for that Joe, food for thought. I have had a quote from Fernando and Philgregg and both seem very thorough in their dealings. The prices are very good for large quantities of figures, a great advantage when you are keen to get started on a new period.

Seems quite a battle of words going on there Gunter between "Big Battalion" and a customer, set to run for a while methinks.

I have used Fernando for several years and I have always been happy with his wargame standard paint jobs. One good way to make sure you get exactly what you want is to paint a figure for each regiment and they will duplicate it. Be careful what you send them, though. A friend of mine sent a Union corporal with chevrons as a sample and he got a 100 corporals back!

The problem for me is the postal service. This isn't Fernando's fault but at this point my package still has not arrived and it has been 7 weeks. Fortunately I only put in 30 or so figures so if it truly is lost then I'm not out much. But this is something else you have to take into consideration, your package may not make it there. Again, no fault of the painting studio but it can happen.

I've sent a package to the Big Battalion group (Thailand) and it got there in a couple of weeks. I sent a package to the Old Guard painters (Kiev) and it took about 3 weeks or so. Next I've just mailed a package to the Artmaster Studio (U.K.) and I'll see how long that takes.

I'm trying to test most of the major (in my opinion anyway) painting studios and compare them in quality and cost. To me paying a little more for a good quality paint job is ok. Another factor is how long does it take any particular studio to complete the job and get it back to you. That is something I'm keeping track of as well.

These are all something to consider when you select a painting studio.

I've used MMPS in Thailand for figures for an 1815 French project and was very pleased with the result.

http://www.mmps.asia/

The pics are a reliable indication of what you get. If you are buying an army and not just a unit you've no problem with any style difference and Fons the owner is good at communicating and getting in touch should there be any issue.

The only problem I had was with customs and a wee problem reading handwriting, but all that got sorted. I'd use again if I fancied another lot of same figures on the same basis.

I've also used a number of UK painters (and am about to again). Location has nothing on it's own to do with professional capability and service. For me its Price, time and postage.....oh and customs!! Price is the big issue and so is the painting style, (ie can I copy it if I need a few more figures?).

Comments like these on various fora help make an informed choice and so does talking to the painter. But at the end of the day its your choice.
All the Best

The Emir
