HYW English UPDATE 2

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

can I ask a very basic question for which there is probably no simple answer? What are the best sources for livery and shield designs. I can find lots of pictures of shields but not sure how this translates into what the knights are wearing?
Curassier
The sources I usually rely on with regards to Heraldry and Livery are in no particular order:

Ian Heath, Armies of the Crusades, Armies of the Crusades, Armies of the Middle Ages Vol. 1 and 2.

Hobilar, The Lance and Longbow Society journal. Excellent!

Freezewater Publications and 'flag' sheets.

Ospreys (sometimes good :) ).

Internet.

Asking folk  .

EDIT: I forgot to answer your question  .

Knights would have worn their own coat of arms either on a surcoat, jupon or tabard depending upon the period. Surcoats, at least as far as Western Europe goes, generally up to 1380-90. Jupons from 1390-1440-50 (ish) and tabards from 1440-1450 onwards. By the time of say, Agincourt many knights and nobles, particularly in England, would have stopped wearing their heraldic devices with the advent of white amour (full harness). Shields also would have been abandoned by those wealthy enough to afford such armours.

Instead, nobles and men of rank would have kept up the tradition of having a banneret bear their arms on a banner usually made of stiffenned cloth with a pole running horizontally through the top of the banner. Standards would also be used in battle though these would be much less common than banners.

Hope that this is of some help? :)

Cheers,

Darrell.

Really helpful - thanks.

Could you also comment on the mixing of knights/men at arms and the "lower orders in the same units? Do you do a first rank of knights and the rest ordinary billmen or whatever? Similarly do you mix knights and sergeants in the same mounted units? No doubt future pictures will help to answer this.

All the best and thanks for your time.

Jon,

I usually play WAB because that is what the majority of folks play at our club. Even then, it's been hard to find Late Med. opponents so my basing is loosely based on the WAB system. I'm going to be painting up a unit of Knights and men-at-arms soon so I'll let you see the results, but basically yes I would have the m-a-a's sitting behind the knights. After all, this was their place. The monies gained by ransom were generally taken by the nobility so they made certain that they were in the 'place of honour'. Actually, as a rule of thumb for the period, any ransoms filtered up to the nobility anyway.

Nothing much has changed  .

Cheers,

Darrell.

The Foundry, Medieval Warfare rules look quite good. written a long time ago by Terry Gore, but well worth a look.

It works out as each archer is on a 20mm frontage. So, yep, that's 180mm for the unit. But, you could juggle the measurements around to suit quite easily :) .

I'm pleased to announce the arrival of the third unit of longbows. One more to come and then it's on to the knights/m-a-a's (which, if the composition works out well enough should include Henry V giving a speach!) and other stuff to round off the army.
