Victrix Brits for 1812

Starting a thread for this project. I've decided to paint this unit as Upper Canada Incorporated Militia (one of the better militia units of the war) since I cannot find definitive information on whether they (The UCIM) had stovepipes or Belgics at this stage. They'd just received an allotment of uniforms incl. shakos, but I don't have a description of which kind.

Here's the planned layout for the base:

And here's after a day of painting. Trying David Imrie's washes to add more nuance.

It's always a little disheartening when you move from the large areas to the smaller stuff that seems to take forever. The crossbelts have the basecoat and wash, waiting for a couple of highlights. After that I'll decide whether they need further blacklining to stand out.

Another couple of nights and they'll be done.

Here's the first batch done. I roughly cut a temporary base for posing purposes.

I aimed for road-dust as weathering, rather than muddy like my WWII Canadians. Just 3-4 quick and dirty glazes of an earth colour who's name escapes me.

Lovely work Tyler.. really, really nice and good choice of complimentary poses.. the Canadians will look like they'll win the war of 1812 on their own!

On to the next batch. This is the final two for the 8 figure base. Am switching to 4-figure batches but wanted to round off before I did.

Oh god the pink! I'm trying to bring my highlights closer to white both as a scale effect and because I've noticed lighter coloured miniatures with proper contrast look better at this scale (or larger scales). Look at some of the bigger scale stuff and look really closely at the colours they use, and how many bring things up to white or close to.

I've thought long and hard about how to highlight red. I sacrificed some sleep and sanity for this. I hope it is as helpful to anyone reading it as it was to me writing it.

Loved the bit on the blog about desaturation of colour- reminds me of Art College

Mute is a lot easier to write repeatedly than desaturate. Easier to spell too.

Finally finished the last two of the base. I got bogged down in lace and crossbelts and it slowed me down. It's the file on the left.

Just an update on my status. I've painted twelve miniatures so far for this unit, with 4 in progress on my workbench. The goal for the unit is 30-32 figures (I'd have to check my notes)

After a longish break brought on by a little fatigue and moving from contacts to 14 year old scratches and pitted -1 glasses I did a little painting tonight. I would have done more, but the local Canadian sports radio station was broadcasting a repeat of an American sports talk show instead of the Canadian football game, so I ended up watching the game instead.

Clarence and Barry's Republic to Empire game at Historicon inspired me, however, to continue painting. Monday I see an ophthalmologist to find out what's going on with my left eye and hopefully get cleared for a new contact prescription.

I TOLD YOU WHAT i TOHUGHT OF THIS STUFF OVER DINNER... vbloddy well get on with it and finish the unit so we can all drool

I spoke with Dave O'Brien today about you and he getting heads together on R2E for 1812.

Clarence and I have a plan to start a new website exclusively for R2E. Maybe you and Dave might want to do a bit of moderating there?

If only we could get in touch with Hugh Alderson who we met at Histroicon. He would be great too... anyone know Hugh?

I'd love to get involved with an R2E website. Working on a complete review of the rules for my blog as we speak. I don't review rules until I've played them which makes it really hard to write reviews for my site.

The funny thing about 1812 is it seems to contradict everything I hear about Napoleonics when it comes to maneuvering individual companies and maintaining frontage.
