New project, Zulus, thousands of them

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

New project, Zulus, thousands of them

Post by Darkman » Wed Dec 28, 2011 1:56 pm

Ok not quite thousands, just a couple of boxes. Played a game of Black Powder the other week as a friend of mine discovered he had 3 file boxes of Zulus and a couple of boxes of British. It was an enjoyable game even though I umpired.

So looking through ebay I noticed that there was a couple of boxes of Warlord Zulus at a reasonable price. Won them and a few more (4 to be exact)

A couple of weeks after they arrived and I have now painted this.

Done with Army painter dark tone over scorched brown. I have decided to do 2 bases for each regiment so I can combine them into one unit if needed.
I decided that the bases could be irregular in shape as I like the idea for the look and it is after all a game for Gentlemen

Very nice, and the film was on again today :)
A moth eaten rag on a worm eaten pole
It does not look likely to stir a man's soul
'Tis the deeds that were done 'neath the moth eaten rag
When the pole was a staff and the rag was a flag.

Really good darkman - and the basing sets them off nicely.
In enterprise of martial kind, When there was any fighting, He led his regiment from behind -
He found it less exciting.

I was hoping to do a Zulu project but had difficulty in the choosing colours for skin tone/painting.So glad to see that you mentioned how you painted the figures. Is scorched brown a GW colour.?.

Yes, 'Scorched Brown' is an official Games Workshop colour name, but you can find an identical match in the Vallejo Games Colour range: 72045 'Charred Brown'.

I would use white as an undercoat given the amount of white feathers etc on the figures.

Actually, Ginger, I would have to disagree. With a jet black undercoat the white feathers could be dry-brushed on top to great effect.

Hi I use a white undercoat, and try not to go over the bits I need to be white.

I do tend to use white as an undercoat for anything I use for dipping unless there is a colour spray I can use as an undercoat.
Some of the people on the Warlord forum suggest using Army Painter Leather Brown spray then the Dark tone after block painting.

Have finished my 4th base and second units of skirmishers. Now will wait until the NNC are released (or until I see the sprues) and see if there is any more variation I can get into my Zulu units.

Now have a chariot army to paint (Newline had a sale  and sucked a load of money out of my pocket) 28 chariots to do.

Thanks for the comments.

Cofindigger, Indeed you could but I would prefer the more subtle effect you would get by doing this.

Prime white block in the skin areas with dark brown - Citadel dark flesh if you still have any lightly dry brush the flesh with a 50:50 mix of the brown and tanned flesh. Glaze with W&N Peat ink in Tamyia gloss medium, including the white areas giving the low lights. Dry brush the glazed white with white & then go onto detail the rest of the figures.
