Progress or mountain...?

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

Progress or mountain...?

Post by Russian James » Mon Dec 24, 2012 6:02 pm

Having only reacquainted myself with historical 'gaming earlier this year, I thought I'd take a look at how badly afflicted I've been by the 'lead addiction'...

1690, Jacobite Scots: 248* purchased, 21 finished, 33 'work-in-progress'
*plus another 135 Warfare Miniatures currently on their way to me from Santa Hilton...

I think I need to start resisting Mr. Hilton's temptations and do some painting next year...

Other 'interests':

Ancient Greek: 48 purchased, 1 finished, 0 'work-in-progress'
Norse / Saxon: 54 purchased, 1 finished, 8 'work-in-progress'
Medieval Scots: 69 purchased, 2 finished, 8 'work-in-progress'
GNW Russian: 19 purchased, 0 finished, 0 'work-in-progress'
GNW Norwegian: 0 purchased, 0 finished, 0 'work-in-progress'

May I wish everyone on the forum a very Happy Yule, and a fulfilling New Year!

Hope to see some of you at various shows.

I would give up on the resisting temptation bit as warfare figures are so moorish just speed up with the painting as they are far too nice to languish long on a lead pile.

Jim,

if it helps I have some 242 Warfare Miniatures of which 26 are painted and 26 in the first stages of painting. A further 78 Cuirassiers are ordered plus my Artillery complement.

Shy too listing the other 'projects'

So we are in some way in the same boat, whithout oars and towed with crazy speed towards the cliffs of a lead mountain  :D

The next year will bring us all closer to a untreatable illness

Best Wishes,
Günter

Hmm, purchased in 2012

54 British Heavy Dragoons, painted 0
18 British Light Dragoons, painted 0
20 British Hussars, Painted 2
86 Saga Scots, Painted 86
8 Saga Irish, Painted 8
0 British Infantry, Painted 45
33 FoW Vehicles, Painted 21
48 Horses == 67 VBCW figures (trade with Andy, I paint horses, he paints infantry :) )

Give into the temptation! I painted about 150 infantry and a dozen cavalry (including King James II) this year. Warfare Miniatures are a joy to paint and the new cuirassiers are some of the best models yet!

I understand the temptation of other periods and can hold my own with anyone's wandering interests... Wargamer's ADD

Clarence, have to agree with you about Claymore Castings! I have them for my Medieval Scots and they are beautiful models.

I'm using my figures as Battle of Harlaw, 1411, as various of my partner's ancestors were involved -Irvine, Ramsey, Forbes...

Jim,

my addiction has been festering for over 25 years. I cannot count what I have in my lead 'Mount Doom'. Off the top of my head these things seem to flow:

1. About 7 boxes of Perry Plastic ACW and 50 blisters
2. About 150 Napoleonic Blisters + 10 boxes of Plastic
3. Around 600 Crimean Foundry
4. 70 FoW packs
5. About 60 blisters of WW2 28mm
6. 300 40mm ACW
7. A Byzantine Essex Army that I bought in a ship clearance in Glasgow in 1994
8. 200 Foundry Ancient Germans
9. 400 AB Napoleonic 15mm
10. My God, I am depressed... who started this bloody thread?

Which Barry is why I have deliberately tried to erase the exact dimensions of my lead pile from my mind. I just know its far too big & work needs to be done to turn it into painted figures.

After all I am a wargamer not a collector of fancy white metal & plastic scrap...... :(

Barry, I'm surprised you don't appear to have any Warfare Miniatures in your collection...

Your pile has been acquired over 25 years, I've only been back for less than 7 months!!! :|

Because he paints those as I said far too good to languish on the lead pile.

Oh, Barry! I don't even want to contemplate my pile of unpainted lead and plastic - the list from my blog was only what was ON MY DESK! Maybe I should take inventory one of these days. I suspect I could open a small store...

Well actually the Marketplace here seems to work quite well as I see quite a few deals being done and of course with no commissions it is cheaper than ebay although I suspect the target market is rather smaller!

I keep promising myself I'll stick some stuff on there some day.

And, as for Warfare stuff, yes there is a lead pile but you chaps keep helping it go down by buying them! Oh, and I am painting quite a few too!

To put that matter in a different direction I give an account what figures have been painted in 2012 out of my Lead pile even if stowed away on an small island

540 Napoleonic Saxon Infantry
176 Napoleonic Saxon Cavalry
72 Napoleonic Saxon Artillery men

I dont want to adorn myself with borrowed plumes but I am very proud of the above :D . Proud like the King of Saxony

Hmm, I gave up trying to count my collection of unfinished projects long ago. It's simpler just to say, "I have some of those, and some of those, and some of those....." ad infinitum
