The Monkey from Hartlepool

Is this a true story? Just heard about the monkey from a French ship which floundered in a storm off the coast of Hartlepool in Napoleonic times, was washed ashore dressed as a French sailor. The natives hung him after a trial.
I am assuming that the majority of viewers of this post are English/Scottish and know that Hartlepool is in the NE part of the country.

Thanks Sir Winston

I saw the story in an investment newsletter of all places and thought it just might be made up.
I never thought to look it up on Wikipedia.
Cheers,

For many years I worked beside a sailor from Hartlepool who now lives in Tampa, FL. Whenever we wanted to annoy him we called him a Monkey Hanger. It suggests the general mentality of his townsfolk! There is also an ale called Monkey Hanger.. quite good actually!

Or, if you follow the wiki thread, it's not from Hartlepool at all, but from Boddam, just up the road from me. Never heard the Boddam bit of the myth, but interesting! Thanks for that :)
