Two balanced armies?

Post by Me paints good » Sat May 31, 2008 7:55 pm

I want two small forces that I can play balanced games with...how do you think this will work out?

Force 1
Infantry Unit (Guard)
Infantry Unit (w/pikes, Drilled)
Infantry Unit (1/3 pikes, Raw)
Infantry Unit (1/3 pikes, Raw)

Cuirassier Unit (2 squadrons, Elite)
Dragoon Unit (2 squadrons, Guard)

Field Guns (Drilled)

VS.

Force 2
Infantry Unit (w/pikes, Elite)
Infantry Unit (1/3 pikes, Drilled)
Infantry Unit (Drilled)
Infantry Unit (w/pikes, Drilled) - French melee modifiers

Cuirassier Unit (2 squadrons Elite) - French melee modifiers
Horse Unit (2 squadrons Drilled) - French melee modifiers
Dragoon Unit (2 squadrons Drilled) - French melee modifiers

I'm thinking that force 2 might be a little stronger, but those two guard units and the artillery in force one might make up for it. I would like to know what some more experienced players

Are Force 2's mounted units all single squadron? Or what?

Then what size? Two squadrons each? Or more?

The "Balance" question was never answered.

Could Barry or someone please respond to this gentleman's question?

The question of balance is a difficult one to address. They look fine to me on paper, but you also need to take commanders, terrain, and deployment into account when designing the scenario. I think the side with the advantage in horse will be the stronger with all else being equal.

I would agree with Clarence. The balance thing is a difficult question because I have not 'pointed' any army lists (although against my better judgment I am considering it).

If this is a 'pick up' game then anyone could win. In a scenario the whole thing is up in the air. Guard dragoons will not perform particularly well in mounted combat but may pass a couple of extra morale tests. Guard infantry in their proper brigade will be very unlucky not to stand to the last man.

As a parting comment any game with such forces WOULD be enjoyable... balanced... I dunno

Since I live in the Western U.S. I'd say do it because wargamers are spread thin out here with all this spaceb and other than playing at my LGS or with my brother, nobody else has rhyme nor reason to get into the period and build an army. Only way we ever get any diversity in our wargaming is through tourneys and pick up games at the few cons we have and such.
