FLAGS

Post by CoffinDodger » Fri Oct 09, 2009 6:08 pm

Gentlemen,

I have been looking over many images of painted figures from your good selves and would like to know what size are the "oversized" flags you use?

My guess is 40mm x 40mm but I could be wrong.

Regards.

Barry,

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I've been looking at flags and had a sneaky suspicion that they were larger than 40mm x 40mm. Tell me, do the flag manufacturers do that size or would you have to basically make them on your own?

If I were making a "double" flag, would that be 50mm x 103mm or 50mm x 106mm? Please make allowances for a geriatric who wishes to get it right.

Jim,

don't quite understand what you mean by a double flag. If you mean two mirror image halves of paper glued together like GMB printed flags I wouldn't do paper or cotton flags that way. If good enough quality paper is used it need only be single thickness with the 'fly 3mm' being used to wrap round the pole. Look at the QND guide to flag makingin the WARCHEST section.. it tells you how I do it there :D

Barry,

That's exactly what I meant by a "double flag" and I have just had a look at the article - great stuff. This site is a veritable mine of information and goodwill from existing members.

Thanks,

Jim

I use linen paper. double sized and wrapped round the flafgpole. flags llik pretty ok.You can buy linen paper in good art shops or you may be in luck and find some in Smiths. It holds its shape well whwhen you use PVA and comes out quite stiff.
have a look at drapeax.org for flags. Downloadable, resizable and printable. oh ... and free.

Jim,

I didn't mean to come across as a pedantic eejit there; it was only in case someone else tried to look up the site.

Apologies,

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the answers. Rather than create a new topic, I thought I'd continue this post with request for your methods of basing. Not the size of bases, but the materials used.

Are there any existing articles on this?

Elmers Glue (aka PVA glue)
Static Grass
Varying degrees of earthtone acrylic paint and dark brown ink
Valejo Sandy Paste
Silfor Grass Tufts
Sand and rocks

How you want to create the base is up to you from there but thats pretty much the stuff I use. Some people have posted youtube videos of their process.
