BLB 2 Cover

Post by quindia » Tue Jun 01, 2010 1:43 pm

As if I haven't been busy enough, I decided it was really time to start breaking ground on the layouts, artwork, etc. for BLB2. Barry and I decided to wait to work on the layout until AFTER all of the editing was finished because R2E turned into a bit of a headache with revisions that changed the format, shuffled tables, and generally threw a wrench into things we considered finished before.

Anyway, I started on the cover back in January and thought you might like to see the WIP... All of my paintings start with a sketch that features the central figures sans details to get the composition rolling...

Image

Next I do a tighter drawing to refine the characters and fill in the details...

Image

I hate painting on a blank canvas, so the next step for me is always to start laying in the background and atmospherics to start to establish the scene. I wanted to do a winter scene this time so I started by painting in some snow and a heavy sky. In the background there is a line of cavalry. I blocked in the horses so I could establish the spray in the foreground to give the effect of thundering hooves!

Image

I decided I didn't like the sky so I reworked it. You can see a hint of dawn along the skyline. It's still not finished, but I will refine it as I go along - the main thing for me at this stage is to establish the mood.

Image

This step is the most tedious of the whole project - I call it 'blocking in' which is basically coloring in between the lines. Every shape is filled with a block color, sort of like miniature painting.

Image

I'll continue to update this topic as the painting progresses... now I'm off to work on my boards for Historicon.

Clarence,

Leave well enough alone. You artists never know when to quit!

The TOP one is the best. The heads remind me of David Imrie, Dave O'Brien and myself at Lundin Links:

Appropriate that you're showing the Masion du Roi Garde du Corps but you should make it the 1st company. Red cuffs and saddlecloth with silver and white on the bandolier. The 1st company would be perfect for Barry as that company's name is the 'Scottish' company (1ere Compagnie ecossaise).

My first choice was the 1st company, but then the whole painting is earth tones with dull blue and red... I still might change it, but I'll have to see what it looks like as it comes along because I'm not sure I really like the effect of using three primaries either.

It's getting there... down to details now and mucking around to try and make everything look 'right'.

Clarence,

I think that you have got the facial expressions spot on: a look of grim determination mixed with constipation... and that's just the horses. I certainly wouldn't want to tangle with them.

C'est Magnifique!
