To be honest Chandler can't defend himself as he is dead, but I do remember him saying at one of the Napoleonic Fairs in the '90s that he would quite happily change his views when new evidence was presented.
You have to also remember when Chandler's books were written, let's have some generosity to a scholar that brought a lot of information to our mutual benefit for the first time. I do not think some of the frankly chippy mean spirited comments from all sides here are justified.
