Dutch standards for 1672

Post by Santiago » Tue Feb 28, 2017 11:25 am

Please does anyone have details for Dutch infantry, cavalry and dragoon flags for the French-Dutch War of 1672-1678, accessible to a non-Dutch speaker? Corresponding uniform info would be a bonus!
I am aware of the De Ridder paintings on the Anno Domini 1672 blog (http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b5 ... mes%201672 - I hope the originator does not mind me copying this link here), but also note there are only a few standards there and the blog owner is somewhat sceptical of the authenticity of the paintings anyway.
And Hall, and Clarence's own flags, start at 1685/1690 - though the question must arise as to whether any of these designs would have still been valid in 1672. The De Ridder flags, though, if one accepts their reliability, look quite different: to my mind more like 30 Years War style (big stripes), than the ones which are available for 1685+.
My ideal result would be 'the other way round', ie flags good for 1672 and still in use in the NYW, as I'd like to use my troops for both wars.
I'm sure others must have gone into this already???

As a slightly related side note the Swedish cavalry at Poltava were still carrying 1672 pattern standards I think (37 years later!)...
