My guys are based 4 to a 40mm square base. Or 6 to a 50x40 base. Whatever takes your fancy.

Hello Bill just joined the forum a few days ago,( Paul here by the way) seen your brits but wasn't sure what would be the best basing for ma French. I have 50x50mm bases was thinking of putting 6 on them.

That would look good Paul(welcome incidentally!) 8) My French are mostly on 45mm frontage & 60mm depth (15mm per man with the depth to provide figure protection and scenic space

Welcome Whiskey,

Six on a 50mm x 50mm base is exactly what I use for my French RtE infantry and they look good.

Jim

I'd recommend basing 2x2, probably on 40mm wide by 40mm deep. Generally, go with as small a base depth you can - that way, you have the least exaggeration of how deep lines and columns are. With marching figures (my personal preference for non-skirmish games), you can pack them in pretty tightly and still be able to protect the minis and make the bases pretty.

With a 24-man battalion, six bases with 4 men each means each base represents a company. You also will have the battalion looking best when in march columns, because there's no need for the shims or space between the bases, as mandated by the rules for bases with larger than 3-4 figures.
With Gen'l Custer Down in Mexico: Yes, one of the goals is to see how many times one can get him killed.

Haha, cheers Bill I need to dulcote them though, but it's a start. I have some of my second unit done now also, don't know if I should spray them in this weather, it might not turn out right on the dulcote finish.

spraying varnish in any conditions is more risky than brushing it on I find & that the propellant gives me asthma symptoms when I am not asthmatic unless I do it outside in a near gale seals the deal there.

I am with Bill and Ginger on this; after ending up with the ghostly musketeers instead of the nice Russian ones; spraying varnish scares the bejebbers out of me.

3rd-ed, 4th-ed and 5th-ed. Spray Matt varnish is the Devil's instrument. Vallejo, brushed on is the way to go. And don't be afraid to slap it on.

Hello Paul

I like my close order infantry to look close ordered - so like, Barry I squeeze a 15mm frontage per figure.

All my 28mm's are based in fours. Two front - two back. 30mm frontage and a 40mm depth. I don't bother with 'company basing' in 28mm. Most of my battalions are made up of six to eight of these bases (24-32 figure units). I like having the narrow two figure frontage bases (rather than three or four figure base frontages) because I can form proper looking route / road columns that wind in and around by built up areas and across my bridges. (They also fit inside my buildings better!)
