SYW in India

Post by Adam Hayes » Sat Sep 28, 2013 11:18 am

This is one of my favourite pweriods/theatres to wargame; elephants, rockets, masses of armoured cavalry, doughty sepoys and occasionally a few haughty European troops. What's not to love?

Our game at the weekend was between 2 similar armies, each comprising of a European element and a larger and less reliable Indian ally. We were trying out an idea to simulate the inertia and caution of the Indian allies by dtarting them with all the units oput of command (this meant they needed to spend impetus for each unit that was moved, not by command.) Worked quite well. (Nick did cheat by spending the time and impetus to bring his units back under command and received a well deserved volley of "friendly" rockets up the rear for his loitering! :D )

More photos here (Not the best quality as the light at the venue was a bit on the dull side.)

Cheers. I have that problem of too many interesting periods, too few of me! Such a butterfly brain it's a miracle that enough units eventually got painted to be able to fight big battles in India. (Still more to do obviously. :) )

One of my long list of "must dos" is to get this sort of info onto our club website.

Just from memory, the guns are big lumps of resin from Scotia Grendel, I think (bought the first couple without packaging, so I wasn't aware of their fantasy roots until later. Yeah okay,it is pretty obvious! )
The French infantry and guns are Front Rank and the sepoys are 1st Corps (or possibly Parkfield Miniatures.) The matchlocks are a mixture of 1st Corps (an excellent but sadly teeny range) and Foundry (from their Indian Mutiny range - Lord knows what it is called now! Most of our cavalry is from their Sikh Wars range.) Gunners and VERY tall jezzaillichis are Redoubts "Wellington in India" offerings - nice but mostly too big to mix in with anything else. Rocket battery is either Bears Den or London War Room (both possibly defunct now) the elephants are from both of these and Foundry and various others converted to look sortof right...

As Alde Garde we had a demo about a fictitious SYW scenario in India.
Look at www.aldegarde.blogspot.com with label "India"
