Perry Napoleonics - Plastic

Post by Rank Bajin » Sun May 04, 2008 4:25 am

Guys,

can any of you elucidate on some rumours I have heard that the next Perry Plastic project is Napoleonics.

I know plastics are not everybodys cup of tea and agree with most of the arguments against (quality wise anyway).

For me playing at 25/28mm in Napoleonics has been why I got into this. However, I'd rather fight with big battalions so cost gets a bit prohibative.

The idea of core plastic infantry with all the bells and whistles in metal could really open up the time period to a whole new genration of gamers.

I remember an old book (might have been a Grant) which I got from he local library as a kid. All the battalions where massive and the cav charges were spectacular.

For me - requests would be line infantry, lightdragoons/chasseurs and dragoons - could easily live with everybody else being metal but you could get a divison built with 36 man battalions pretty economically.

all the best'

I haven't heard anything specific about Perry plastic Napoleonic figures, but a couple of things would make me think no:

1. They already have a full range of metal French and various allied troops, including the core troops. A plastic line coming from them would compete with their own metals which are very popular. I suppose they could release British troops...

2. My second point. I think Napoleonics are a poor choice of subject for plastics because there are so many uniform variations between nations and even the early and late phases of the war. I would anticipate more projects like the ACW where core troops could be used for both sides (maybe like BLB).

Don't get me wrong! I hope they are planning something like this. It's been all I could do not to get a couple of boxes of the ACW models "just to paint up a few units".

%@#*!!!

I just finished four 36-figure battalions of metal models.

I still think that's a strange choice for the reasons I listed above, but them will probably sell a million of them...

I was actually scared to click on the link. I'm glad it's not Late Medieval or I may have ended up with boxes of mini's oozing out of the front door  .

They do look beautifull though......... maybe just one box to satisfy my curiosity

Cheers,

Darrell.

I believe things go around in circles sometimes, :?
First the boy, then the man,
then the old man, who enters his "second childhood".

In common with many historical wargamers,
I cut my teeth on Airfix figures as a boy. :)
Then I moved onto lead as a man. 8)

Now before anyone says I'm a decrepit old man in his dotage,
I hav'nt moved into hard plastics - yet.
Though I might be tempted :!:

Life's like that sometimes (but I still hate Brussel Sprouts - man and boy)

Well I won't be buying.

Why? because my house is stuffed with unpainted piles of one off sweetie buys; from Pendrakon 10mm Colonials, to Airfix 54mm ECW (for wargaming!!) via boxes and boxes of 1/72 neu-plastics.

No more!

Had a look at he Perry ACW hard plastics down at the Club Liam (curtesy of Dave T). Nice sculpting, and diversity with the "bolt ons" (hats, standards, drums) Nappy's next :)

Bonus for a prospective buyer was a simple ruleset (I read it in 15 mins - and I hate reading rules  ) supplied in the box, and again - a painting guide. Now I would like to see them painted up, and then see them again after "a few campaigns". I'm of the opinion they will be just as good as lead. Lead figures are subject to damage as well after all :!:

I can certainly see a niche market here for "big battalions" at low lower cost.

On a seperate tack, I can also see that the way Perry Miniatures have presented their ACW packaging as a distinct encouragement to new entrants to the hobby, and conversions from the GW genre to historical. "It does what it says on the tin" - figures, painting guide and ruleset = historical tabletop wargaming one stop shop :D

Couldnt agree with you more Bob. After all, the Perrys have close connections with GW and theyre no daft - they will have had time to consider the market, think about GWs mistakes and look at the inevitably changing demograph (or to paraphrase your excellent observation - Plastics, fantasy, girls and beer, metal, plastics!), and come up with an entry level product.

I bought boxes of the ACW, but not for me, as a project for Patrick ( my wee lad for those who dont know) - its got everything he needs to get started. Plus hes using my foundry system paints and is already as good as some adults. Watch this space for my "Cheap painting services" advert.

The Frenchies look great, and more variety in a box than most ranges.

So its outstanding.

I dont think there should be too much damage to plastics, once painted and varnished - its the weight of metal that makes paint chip and thinks break off. Im not even worried about the bayonets - I figure if its a hard enough jolt to break a plastic bayonet, it would do for a metal one as well.

GdB is what I am painting for just now, and this is great news for that.

A box of Brits would be the business.

Aha rampant commercialism - I thought so but was afraid say. Does make sense if you are a manufacturer. I suppose I would as well if I had their talent.

Nice to hear Patrick is following in his dad's footsteps. :D I got Duncan to do his 20mm Russian armour - his dry brushing technique was admirable compared to my finishing details

GdB. - Mr Smith's favourite ruleset ! Watch out for Barry's Republic to Empire (R2E) when it becomes available. Relatively fast play Napoleonic Rules (even I can understand) for large scale encounters currently being play tested by that austere company of "The League of Gentlemen Wargamers"

Well I definitely won't be buying. I've just packed up my painted French infantry for our Ligny game, 11 battalions of 36 figures and 5 battalions of 24 figures so who needs more French infantry ?

Well maybe just one box
