Books on Prussian Army

Post by PaulMc » Wed May 26, 2010 11:57 pm

Hello folks,

I'm looking for a wee bit of help regarding the Prussian army for the Hundred Days campaign. I've already got the Ospreys earmarked for purchase but, I do know how basic they are. I'm after as much good information on uniforms (preferably well illustrated), units, battles etc. I've bought Hofschroer's "Waterloo 1815: Wavre, Plancenoit & The Race To Paris" as a bit of a taster and I have Adkin's "Waterloo Companion".

Anything on the Prussian army for the 1813-15 period would be helpful too.

So, what would you chaps recommend?

Paul,
If you go to www.calpeminiatures.co.uk and look under the FULL catalogue you will find lots of usefull uniform info in amongst the figure listings, this was pretty much my main source of reference when I painted my stuff.

Thank you gents. :)

I remember seeing a book at one of the LOGW weekends (it may have been yours Kevin) where the illustrations were old cigarette cards I think. I thought that would one I'd like to have in my collection, can anyone remember it?

I don't know where you'd get hold of a copy now, except via public library inter-loan, but David Nash's book published by Almark back in the 1970s was perfect for the 1815 army.

It still comes up on Ebay every now and then. I have a copy and think it's a great book but recently I have heard a few guys saying that the book is a bit dated now and some of the info is wrong. Being typical wargamers they never mention what they think is wrong or ever offer any evidence that their new info is more reliable. You will always find great info and pics on this site.

Paul

As part of many Prussian books in my collection, one of the best is:

The Prussian Army - to 1815
by Digby Smith - published by Schiffer Publishing.

Its a nice chunky piece of work with very good uniform references as well as regimental histories, campaign histories etc. Not sure where you would now get a copy - got mine from Caliver a couple of years ago. Not the cheapest book (I paid £32) but well worth it if you can track down a copy/secondhand.

Yes, I've got quite a lot of stuff on my blog. Thanks for mentioning in it, Dave.

@PaulMc: to save you time rooting around the dark corners of my blog, I can point you at a couple of specifics that you might find helpful:

a). The Prussian Army Resources page - I've collected together a lot of uniform plates and links in one place for convenience. I'm still gradually adding more stuff to it:

b). You can download a PDF of my recent Wargames Illustrated article too. That's got a panel in it about some of the most useful books about the Prussian army:

Paul, apart from the Almark book I also have The Prussian Army 1808-1815 by W.J. Rawkins, Prussian Landwehr and Landsturm 1813-1815 by Peter Hofschroer produced by the Napoleonic Association. This is a great book packed full of uniform detail and history as well as orbats and finally Full Color Uniforms of the Prussian Army by L. Sachse. These are all quite dated now so I'm not sure how you would get hold of them but I can highly recommend the Hofschroer book.

Fantastic information gents! This has given me so much to go on I don't know how I'm going to fit in all this reading with my current painting schedule.
