Austrian army, any good books?

Post by Keith T » Mon Sep 26, 2011 3:15 pm

Hi
I am just starting to build up and Austrian brigade
.
Are their any good books that would give detailed actions down to battalion strengths that I could use for scenarios.

I have not played 28mm Napoleonic for a very long time, watched the very splended game at Partizan, spoke with my old friend dave[o'brian]
and yes have bought some very nicely painted Austrian line.

I intend to start with a strong brigade of French & Austrian and hopefull take it from their.

So any good books you might sujest please.

John Gill's trilogy on 1809, Thunder on the Danube, fits the bill.
With Gen'l Custer Down in Mexico: Yes, one of the goals is to see how many times one can get him killed.

Such an old friend that he can't even remember how to spell my name
Welcome to the forum Keith, there are lots of helpful people here and I'm pleased that our efforts have pulled you back into the period, we had some cracking games many years ago before you went into exile

If I can get the wife to clear all her paperwork off the dining table then we could have a small game as I no longer have a 6x4 table in the house. If you give me enough notice we could probably arrange a game at Colin's where he has a permanent 8x6 set up in the garage.

just as an aside, If you are interested in a broader overview of the many forces that fought, armies of the Napoleonic wars (osprey) is quite good.

For the 1809 campaign, but looking at the smaller German allied armies (or better divisions) look for "With eagles to Glory" also by Gill. I find it still one of the best Napoleonic books ever. lso a lot about the Tyrolean revolt

If you are looking for a in-dept study try this classic:

Napoleon's Great Adversary: Archduke Charles and the Austrian Army 1792 - 1814. by Gunther E. Rothenberg

In James Arnold's Crisis on the Danube IIRC there is an appendix on wargaming a divisional size action between the French and Austrians.

Thanks for all the replys
I have picked up Napoleon's Great Adversary: Archduke Charles and the Austrian Army 1792 - 1814 and volume 2 of John Gill's trilogy on 1809, Thunder on the Danube.
I have painted 2 battalions of Grenz, 3 of line [2 hungarian] and now painting a grenadier battalion.

As I lack an opponent with figures[pete is the slowest painter on the planet, he has been painting the same ancient Indian army for nearly 2 years.]
I have been buying French troops of ebay and another friend is painting more, so far 3 French line battalions, some hussars and dragoons.
Will try March of eagles first with my 10yr old son and pete, then on to Republic to empire.
Thanks again chaps
Keith :D
