Morand's Division 30th and 17th Infantry Regiment of line.

Post by Artigas4421 » Sat Oct 29, 2011 9:54 pm

I am trying to create Marechal Davouts 1st Army Corps for R2E battle of Borodino.
I am keep getting conflicting information on the size of the battalions.
Last I read the 17th and the 30th had 5 battalions and 4 light guns. Can anyone tell me the strength of these battalions so I can properly build them for my army?

Thanks
Dan

If you can't find out actual numbers, you could go theoretical full-strength numbers, with a variable number taken out to simulate losses from before the battle.

According to Nafziger, the 17th had 85 officers and 2,901 men on August 25th. The 30th had 83/3,176.

Both in 5 battalions with four 3pdr guns.

Hope that helps. The return for Borodino only shows units and not strength.

Nafziger is a great source but those numbers sound a little high. 600 - 640 men per battalion in the field 2 months into the campaign. That is just over 10% attrition. I guess you have got to assume that maybe the battlaions were overstrength to begin with? Still, seems a bit high.

As of the 1 August returns, the regiments were 3,594 and 3,808 strong. So that is ~720 and ~760 per battalion. Seems likely they started well over strength.

Ref the 5th Battalions

IIRC Line Regiments fielded four battalions each of 6 companys (1xGr, 1xVoltigueir and 4xFusilier) the 5th battalion was a depot battalion but of only four fusilier companys.

Were the 5th battalions on campaign from the depot?

As I recall, they were battalions 1-4 and 6; #5 was the depot at home.
