Att: Günter (or anyone else interested in 1812 Saxon cav)

Post by Duke of Plaza-Toro » Mon Nov 28, 2011 10:48 am

Günter - following on from our discussions and your excellent help with references regarding the Saxon Garde du Corps and Zastrow Cuirassiers for 1812, I thought you might like to inspect the progress so far -

Image

Garde du Corps here, although obviously elements of these will be converted for the Zastrow. Top row (l to r) is the 'at rest' body and then the charging body. Officer (garde du Corps) bottom left, and then trooper and officer's heads (they look a bit odd at this stage because the back of the heads / hair will be modelled when the heads go on the bodies). Other details such as carbines to be added later.

All the best

Barry, myself and our group of friends are doing Borodino as a large demo game next year so it would be great to have these painted up for the battle, along with Gunter's Saxon infantry.

True! but they did fight at lots of other actions that we plan to refight and with a flag swap the can fit in as other white coated nationalities which is what I have done with my only Saxon unit so far, very multi-cultural those Saxons

Hi John,

sorry for the late reply but I caught a onesided pneumonia and was kept in bed for 2 weeks. The last week I was on Holidays in Dresden.

The greens with all the details added are looking great.

Dave,

The multi-cultural attitude of the Saxon Infantry let them be used as Cleve-Berg, the Rheinbund or Fürsten-Division, Würzburg Infantry and a lot of other smaller Rheinbund States.
You are right about that the Saxons had many engagements on the southern flank of the invading army, with or without the Austrian Auxiliary Corps.

Cheers,
Günter

No worries Günter. I must admit I was starting to get a little worried about your silence and I was going to email you directly from work tomorrow!

I fully sympathise. I've been off work all this last week with a particularly nasty virus. Still coughing and spluttering even now...

I hope your Dresden holiday was good and helped with your recovery.

John,

Will these be a one off offering or the beginning of a larger Saxon range? Great news either way. I just wish someone would do a good set of Westphalians in 28mm (some of the nice ones out there have little errors...).

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

what do you have in mind? Westphalians are very well researched and, if you like a more static look, well sculpted.

Take a look at Steve Barbers range for Westphaliens:

http://www.sbarber-models.clara.net/main.html

I did with his figures my Westphalien Guard Grenadier.

http://www.leagueofaugsburg.com/fightin ... =13&t=1983

It was his Westphaliens who inspired me to raise my Saxons.

Hope that helps,
Günter

Hello Mike

The Saxon 1812 heavy cavalry are something of a one-off project for some good friends of ours - so no plans to expand the range at this time. If they sell really well though we might be persuaded to look at other Saxon subjects. (Don't want to step on Günter's toes too much though :) )

Günter,

Thanks for the link to Steve Barber. I actually like the miniatures but, if I am right, they are one of the companies with one of the small errors I mentioned. In particular, if is my understanding that Westphalian line fusiliers only wore a single belt over the left shoulder for the cartridge box. Steve Barber has them with a second belt for the bayonet (this is correct for the Grenadiers and Voltigeurs who had also a sword on that belt).

I do not have my copy of Wesfälisches Militär by M. Gärtner and E. Wagner handy, but I definitely recall this being shown on Knötel plate depicting the Westphalian 5th Regiment at Halberstadt (not their best showing). Most other Knötel plates show the elite companies, hence two belts, when they show line infantry and so I believe this may be a source of confusion.

John: Thanks for the status on the Eureka cavalry. I can understand not wanting to step on Günter's range.

Burkhard and von Peter: you raised my hopes and then dashed them...

Thanks to all!

Mike
