What sort of evidence is there for the date at which it became normal to wear a tricorn in the British army? (I'd also like to know for the French army but let's keep it simple). And was its use led by one branch of the service or what? For example, did cavalrymen set the fashion that the foot followed, or was it something that was fashionable with civilians and then spread into various branches of service?
