The answer is that they did not change tactics and then change back after the war as is sometimes claimed. The reliable historical evidence is clear that the French continued to use the same tactics. The view that they didn't is a myth based on a single incident taken out of context. The thing that did change is that other nations tactics improved so that they were equal to the French rather than inferior as they had previously been.
