WSS books: Charles Grant

Post by Theo Raykoske » Wed Apr 11, 2012 5:32 pm

Guys,

As a relative newcomer to this fascinating era, would you recommend these books for information on uniforms of both sides? At the moment, I have only the Ospreys.

A resounding "Yes" to that, Theo. There is a great deal of organisational & uniform information concisely presented with useful tables & excellent colour plates. Vol 1 is predominantly the armies of the Dutch & German theatres & Vol 2 the Spanish & Italian theatres, though this vol also has battle details. I would very much say these are a "must have" for gamers in this period.

Cheers, Rohan.

Rohan,

Thank you for your comment - sometimes a book is not what it appears to be but these sound good, then.

Best Wishes

The organisational information is not always true and uniform tables have many gaps.
They are quite good for larger countries like France (in which is really second only to R. Hall's CD), England, Low Countries etc., but section about smaller German states is poor IMO, and Bavarian is sometimes misleading.
Anyway the books are useful, especially for a beginer. NB there is no info about flags.

Guys,

Thank you for the finely-tuned advice, too. I'll go for the Hall CDs, my core interests being France, Britain, Holland, Denmark and those imposing "Austrian" cuirassiers!

It is great to be able to tap into all your knowledge and experience!

All Good Wishes

Bad news for you.
Robert Hall's magnificent CDs cover France and Imperial Army only.
Low Countries are described rather than graphically depicted and Danish are none.
British troops are included in series of rather expensive "plates" , so I recomment you to see 'Churchill's' thread on this forum, where painted British regiments are shown.

You might also try the Baccus website which has several CDs covering the other nationalities you mention.

Oh m'gawd, must grab a chair! After years...and years...and years, can this be true?

Dare it be with a lobster for the Turks? If so, they be Bavarian too?

Nay, don't say it, floppy hat (shhhhhh)?

Oh well, floppy, that's good as well, but (possibly) a lobster? Oh my...

Either way, this day is ending decidely better than it began, as least in central California...thank you.

Cuirass under coat
Cuirass over coat

Nice horses! Lobster pots are sounding good too :D
(The historical evidence that God comes from Lancashire is slim, however he's definitely not from Yorkshire)

Yesterday was a trying day and was being quite nicely mitigated by Samuel Smith's IPA, which my lady poured, BTW. 8)
