Holstein-Gottorp uniforms (WSS)

Post by footslogger » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi,

I have the Robert Hall plates. He depicts the infantry in a kind of cassock. I also have the Goldberg doc and he does the same but under descriptions of the infantry states "uniform unknown." My German isn't good enough to know what else he might say about the uniforms - I was scanning it and not finding anything promising. Anyone know any more about these?

Thanks,
-f

Should this be Infantry or Cavalry?

EDIT:

If for the last maybe this helps:

Bear in mind, that Hall's book is newer than Goldberg's.
Paint your troops using his plates as a source.

Cassock was a form of slevless cloak, used by many armies in the end of 17th century, most notably by the Danish, to protect soldiers from elements. It's questionable if it was worn in combat. Generally soldier on the battlefield would appear in the coat or long camisol.

Yeah, why depicted in the cassock was really my question, and behind that, why these folks and no one else in the plates? It would be a lot easier to have them just in their coats (does anyone make figures of guys wearing the cassocks?)

Dixon make a few figures in cassocks. It took me a while to figure what type of coat they were wearing until I saw a picture of a soldier in a cassock.
