french livery resource?

Post by footslogger » Mon Jul 23, 2012 3:49 pm

Is there a resource giving information about liveries of French families in this period?

I've done some online searching with nothing useful.

My immediate concern is liveries for Gondrin, but a broad resource is what I'm interested in.

The best source are the Robert Hall plates

There is no such thing, alas. Hall created his plates by compiling the existing sources, but there are still many gaps and a lot of liveries remain unknown to us - especially those of the more minor households and foreign commanders. I don't think Gondrin's livery is among the recorded ones, but I'd have to check that out.

One useful - though limited - source is René Chartrand's series of Osprey MAA books on the army of Louis XV, especially volumes 1 and 2 which list quite a few liveries for the larger households and even some minor ones. The info obviously applies to Louis XV's reign rather than Louis XIV's but most of these liveries remained basically the same throughout the 17th and 18th centuries - though the amount and disposition of lace could vary tremendously from one reign to the other.
One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.
