Books/internet links Duch Forces 1660-1721 uniforms and stuf

Post by The Question » Thu Aug 30, 2012 6:37 am

Does somebody know some good books /internet sites about the Dutch army formations and the colours of uniforms with the units in the Dutch army.

I don't know how complete the BLB book is about this..

Thanks in advance.

Regarding links, you can always get a good start with
http://www.milwiki.nl/dutchregiments/
this site is basically a copy of Ringoir's publication on the genealogy of the various regiments of the Dutch army (ab urbe condita, so to speak).
http://rampjaar.blogspot.nl/ posts regularly on uniforms, flags, etc, and is well worth checking
http://www.spanishsuccession.nl/dutch_army.html gives some additional information on the Dutch army during the War of the Spanish Succession.

The most important source for the history of the Staatse Leger during the period you are interested in is Het Staatsche Leger. Your local library should be able to get a copy for you via inter-library loan. Though the last volume ends with the conclusion of the War of the Spanish Succession, it still provides you with ample detail on the army. Not much on colour of uniforms though. Related, you may also want to check out one or more of the books written by dr. Olaf van Nimwegen. In particular his book on the Dutch army and military revolution, covering the period 1588 - 1688 is worth reading. (Again not much on uniforms.)
As for uniforms, C.A. Sapherson compiled a small book on the Dutch army of William III between 1688 and 1702, that has uniform details :)

Hope this helps you to get started.

kind regards,
Wienand

There is a great collection of watercolor prints at the Dutch Army Museum and they are available online.

Mark Allen also did a great series for Wargames Illustrated years ago that featured multiple articles on the Dutch uniforms and standards.

Quindia do you happen to know in which issues this was put in?

Het staatsche leger is gonna be hard to get.
Also the book written by dr. Olaf van Nimwegen cost around €100 is this normal for that book?

Kind regards.

Jeroen,

Not sure which book of van Nimwegen you were looking for. His Het Staatse Leger en de militaire revoluties (1588-1688) sells for 23/24 Euri:
http://boekwinkeltjes.nl/uitgebreid_zoe ... =1&overig= The English translation of this book is indeed terribly expensive. For Het Staatsche Leger a library will be the only alternative I am afraid.

Good luck :)

Robert Hall is working on a uniform book for the Dutch in the WSS. I hear the first volume will be out around the end of this year.

Footslogger, do you know whether it will be released as an entire book, or in plate form?

All,
I have an index of WI when I bought the first 200 issues on CD...if interested I can post on this site if allowed, its a Word document. But to answer the Mark Allen articles for this period, see WI's: 27, 32, 36, 41, 49, 51, 52, 54, 59, 61, 62, 64, 65, 66, 68, 74, 77, 79, 82, 83, 101, 123, 125, 126, 127, 128, 170, 139, 173, 174, and 175.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone reckon Mr Allen would be willing to republish these as a separate book(s)?
